Big Plays Hurt ASU in Loss to No. 14 Wildcats

No. 14-ranked Abilene Christian used four scores from more than 50 yards out on its way to a 52-28 win over Angelo State Saturday night at San Angelo Stadium.

The Wildcats (6-1, 5-0 LSC, 2-0 LSC South) got two long touchdown passes in the first quarter to take a quick 14-0 lead and never looked back.  ACU quarterback Billy Malone connected with Edmund Gates from 56 yards out on the Wildcats' first possession and then found Jerale Badon for a 52-yard strike on their second drive of the game.

ASU (2-4, 2-3 LSC, 1-2 LSC South) did respond early in the second quarter, however, as junior tailback Daniel Thomas took a screen pass 84 yards to cut the Wildcat lead in half, 14-7, with 11:27 remaining in the first half. This connection was the longest by the Rams this season and the sixth-longest in school history.   But Abilene Christian tacked on 17 unanswered points to end the half and took a 31-7 advantage into the locker room.

The Wildcats amassed 707 yards of offense on the night, the second-highest tally in school history.  Malone ended the contest with 383 yards on 27-of-38 passing with two scores.  He connected with 11 different receivers with Badon leading the pack with eight grabs for a game-high 144 yards and a score.  Tailback Bernard Scott added a game-high 231 yards with three touchdowns on just 18 carries.

ASU's Thomas nearly recorded his second 200-yard outing of the season as he ended the night with 199 yards and a score on 28 carries. His lone rushing touchdown came in the third quarter as he scampered 70 yards, a career long, for the score, the longest rush by a Ram this season. Thomas' 199 yards ranks as the 12th highest single-game total in ASU history.  In addition, he added a team-high 111 receiving yards on three catches to end the night with 310 all-purpose yards.  Senior quarterback Jay Immel tossed for 173 yards on 14-of-16 passing with two touchdowns in relief of starter Josh Neiswander.  Neiswander had 142 yards, completing 6-of-10 passes, with a score before leaving the game in the third quarter. The Rams tallied 527 yards of offense on the night, the second time this season that ASU has reached the 500-yard plateau.

Sophomore linebacker Ian Ritchey led the Rams with eight tackles while sophomore linebacker D'Angelo Waites pitched in seven stops.

The Rams will now begin a tough two-game road stretch with a trek to Commerce for an LSC crossover game next weekend.  ASU will pay a visit to Texas A&M-Commerce for a 2 p.m. meeting on Saturday, Oct. 20, at Memorial Stadium.
