The 2007 season came to an end for the Angelo State football team Saturday night with a 47-21 loss at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The Rams fell to 2-8 after dropping their fifth consecutive game. TAMUK improved to 3-8 with the win.
The Javelinas posted a 21-0 lead in the second quarter before ASU could find the end zone. The Rams got on the scoreboard with 9:13 left in the first half as quarterback Josh Neiswander connected with Sam Tindol for a 37-yard strike to cut the TAMUK lead to two touchdowns.
The home team responded, however, with a safety and a pair of touchdown tosses by freshman quarterback Daniel Ramirez to pull ahead, 37-7, late in the half. With six seconds before halftime, Neiswander found Chris Fowler for a 50-yard touchdown to trim the Javelina lead to 23 points, 37-14, at the break.
The two offenses slowed down in the second half. TAMUK extended its lead to 44-14 with 4:21 left in the third period as Ramirez found Dante Higgins for a 20-yard touchdown, his fourth TD pass of the night. The Javelinas added a 29-yard field goal by Christian Brom early in the fourth quarter. ASU backup quarterback Jay Immel ended the scoring with a one-yard dive with 6:37 remaining in the contest.
Neiswander completed 13-of-28 passes for 186 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Immel played the majority of the fourth quarter for the Rams, completing 5-of-9 passes for 59 yards.
Fowler and Tindol each pulled in a team-best four catches against the Javelinas. Fowler ended the night with 80 yards and a score while Tindol added 62 yards and a touchdown. Charles Amos led the Rams on the ground with 14 carries for 74 yards.
Defensive back Tarric Jones tallied a game-high nine tackles for the Rams, including one for a loss. Linebacker Jordan Cortez and cornerback Quinton Butler each added eight stops.
For TAMUK, Martinez completed 23-of-32 passes for 272 yards with touchdown tosses to four different receivers. Ray Miller rushed for 102 yards on 22 carries with a score and led the Javelinas with five catches for 51 yards.
