Rams Nearly Stun Texas State

The Angelo State football team (0-1) almost posted one of its biggest upsets in recent history, however host Texas State scored on a one-yard plunge in the final two minutes to secure a 21-14 come-from-behind victory Saturday night in front of 13,952 screaming fans at Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos.

The Rams grabbed a 14-7 lead early in the third quarter on a four-yard touchdown toss from junior quarterback Josh Neiswander to sophomore tight end Nate Bayless as ASU took control of the game in the second quarter and looked to be on its way to a victory.

The Bobcats gathered themselves in the final frame with two scores to eliminated ASU's hopes of its first win over an NCAA Division II opponent in 11 seasons.  The last such win for the Rams came in the season opener of the 1997 campaign with a 24-17 win at Sam Houston State.  Last fall, ASU had anothe near miss with a 17-13 loss at Sam Houston State in the season opener.

Texas State knotted the contest, 14-14, with 14:53 left in the game as Clint Toon and Mishak Rivas made a nine-yard connection.  The Bobcats capped the victory with a one-yard run by fullback Blake Burton with 1:48 remaining.

The Rams got a stellar performance from Neiswander as he completed 18-of-25 passes for 213 yards and a career-best-tying two touchdowns. The Winnsboro native connected with senior Drew Peterson with just 15 seconds left in the first half from the one-yard line to knot the game at the break, 7-7, before hitting Bayless for the go ahead score on the Rams' first possession of the second half.

Senior tailback Daniel Thomas rushed for a game-high 68 yards on 23 carries while fellow senior Terrell Lee added five carries for 22 yards.  Senior Sam Tindol led all receivers in the game with five catches for 94 yards. Thomas had four grabs for 44 yards, Peterson had four catches for 40 yards and Bayless ended the night with three grabs for 25 yards.

Texas State (1-0) used a 72-yard drive to open the game to take an early 7-0 lead with 10:18 left in the first quarter. But the Ram defense would then shutout town TSU over the remainder of the half, allowing just 47 more total yards to the Bobcats leading into the locker room.

The Rams ended the game outgaining host Texas State, 306-288, and forced three turnovers via interception. Angelo State got 227 yards through the air while adding 79 yards on the ground while amassing more than five more than the Bobcats in time of possession.

Junior linebacker Ian Ritchey led the Rams in stops with eight total tackles (three solo) while junior cornerback Rickey McKinley and junior linebacker Edward Cantrell each added seven stops.  Senior linebacker Jordan Cortez, junior safety Pete Parker and redshirt freshman safety D.J. Clough each had an interception.

For Texas State, Toon ended the game with 117 yards on 6-of-11 passing with one touchdown and one interception. Starting quarterback Bradley George was 2-for-9 for 19 yards with a TD and two picks. Karrington Bush, the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year from 2007, rushed for a team-best 62 yards while Cameron Luke led the Bobcats with four catches for 60 yards.

Next up for the Rams is a trip to Commerce next weekend to face Texas A&M-Commerce. Game time at Memorial Stadium is 7 p.m.
