Rams Drop Defensive Battle

The Angelo State football team (0-2) was handed its second straight loss by single digits Saturday night as the Rams fell at Texas A&M-Commerce, 13-10, at Memorial Stadium in Commerce.

It came down to a fourth-and-goal play at the A&M-Commerce three yard-line with less than four minutes remaining in the contest when Ram quarterback Will Mezger was sacked by Lions William Green and Ramon Jackson. ASU had one last possession with just over a minute remaining but an A&M-C interception sealed the loss.

Mezger had a solid performance in his first career collegiate start, completing 13-of-23 passes for 115 yards with one interception. Senior tailback Daniel Thomas carried the Rams on the ground with his seventh career 100-yard rushing performance. Thomas ended the night with 123 yards on 26 carries.

The Rams looked to take an early lead as Mezger guided his squad quickly down the field to set up a 32-yard field goal attempt. However, a blocked try kept ASU scoreless and Lions responded with two field goals in the second quarter to take a 6-0 lead into the locker room.

The defensive unit would give the Rams their first lead of the game with 9:13 left in the third quarter as senior safety Michael McLeod scooped up a fumble and scampered 18 yards for a touchdown, giving ASU a 7-6 lead after the converted point after.  McLeod forced the fumble by A&M-C's Ernest Quander after a Lion screen pass.

The host Lions (1-1) regained the lead on their next possession as tailback James Jamison capped a quick four-play drive with a 31-yard option run for a score with 7:58 left in the third frame. ASU would add a 32-yard field goal later in the quarter by Ryan Smith, to cut the lead back to three points.

McLeod led the Rams with seven tackles, including one for a loss, with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. McLeod also had recovery on a blocked A&M-C punt in the fourth quarter. Junior linebackers Ian Ritchey and Edward Cantrell each added five stops.

For the second time in as many weeks the Rams limited an opponent to less than 300 yards of total offense, holding A&M-Commerce to just 261 yards. However, ASU managed just 219 yards of offense against the Lions.

For the second straight game, senior wide receiver Sam Tindol led the Rams in receiving with four catches for 36 yards while junior wide out Robert Boone added three grabs for 29 yards and senior receiver Drew Peterson had three receptions for 13 yards.

Next up for the Rams is a third consecutive road game to start the season as ASU will visit Southwestern Oklahoma on Saturday, Sept. 13. Game time at Milam Field in Weatherford, Okla., is 6 p.m.
