Rams explode past SWOSU, 55-10

It was an offensive exhibition that Angelo State football fans have not seen in five seasons as the Rams (2-1) torched Southwestern Oklahoma, 55-10, Saturday night at San Angelo Stadium.

Junior quarterback Josh Neiswander tied an ASU record with six touchdown tosses as he completed 22-of-26 passes for 311 yards before taking a rest midway through the third quarter. Neiswander's 311 yards is tied for the 15th-best passing performance in ASU history and is second time he has surpassed the 300-yard plateau in his career. He recorded his seventh-career 200-yard passing game, the fifth-best total in school history.

The Rams recorded more than 500 yards of total offense and 50 points for the first time since the 2005 season, a campaign that ended with an NCAA Division II playoff appearance. Angelo State amassed 524 yards, the most since recording 582 yards against Southern Nazarene in the 2005 season opener. The Rams' 55 points was the most since a 58-53 win at West Texas A&M that same season and ties the sixth-point total in school history. In that win over WTAMU, Trey Weishuhn became the first Ram to throw for six touchdown passes. It was ASU's largest margin of victory (45) since a 53-7 win at Adams State in 1999.

After the Rams' first offensive possession, it wasn't clear that the ASU offense would be so explosive. Angelo State would actually score its first points of the night on a safety after a bad snap on a punt attempt by the Bulldogs, putting ASU up 2-0 midway through the first quarter.  The Rams would then score on their next seven possessions, using the momentum created by their first safety in a decade.

Prior to Saturday night, the Ram offense had not scored a first-half touchdown this season. ASU followed the safety with four-straight offensive scores before halftime. Angelo State would expand its lead on a 12-yard run by junior Dwight Pete with 5:06 left in the first quarter, giving the Rams an 8-0 advantage after the missed extra point. Neiswander would then add three touchdown passes before the Bulldogs would stop a run of 35 straight first-half points by ASU.

Neiswander's first touchdown toss came with 3:44 left in the opening stanza as he found junior V'Keon Lacey for a 21-yard strike to put the Rams up 15-0. Neiswander then connected with freshman Dakarai Pecikonis for a 27-yard touchdown pass with 12:12 left in the first half and added a second TD toss to Lacey, a four-yard pass with 8:19 left before the break. The Rams would complete their first-half scoring with a six-yard touchdown swing pass from Neiswander to Pete with 3:18 left before intermission.  SWOSU would post a 35-yard field goal by Chad McIntosh to trim the Ram lead to 35-3 at the break.

In the second half, Neiswander would add touchdown passes to Pete and Pecikonis before giving way to backup Aqura Brown. The Neiswander-to-Pete nine-yard connection came with 11:32 left in the third quarter to put ASU up 42-3 after ASU first second-half possession.  Neiswander's final scoring toss was a 66-yard strike to Peciknonis with 9:46 left in the third quarter, putting the Rams up 49-3 before his exit.

The Bulldogs (0-3) scored their only touchdown of the night with 3:18 left in the contest on a 13-yard pass from Steve Day to Joe Sawyer. ASU would tack on a two-yard touchdown run by freshman Austin Benson with 40 seconds left to complete the scoring.

Lacey ended the night with five catches for 88 yards while Pecikonis had two catches for 93 yards. Pete led the Rams on the ground with nine carries for 67 yards and added three catches for 26 yards. In a quarter and a half, Brown was 4-for-8 for 44 yards, giving the Rams 355 passing yards on the night. ASU added 169 yards on the ground.

The Rams defense spread the wealth as no ASU player had more than six tackles.  Sophomore linebacker Lance Tissue and sophomore safety D.J. Clough each had six stops while freshman safety Logan Bryan, senior linebacker D'Angelo Waites and senior cornerback Rickey McKinley each added five tackles. The Rams collected three interceptions of SWOSU's Day, two by Bryan and another by junior safety Tanner Jacobs.  Angelo State sacked Day three times, twice by freshman lineman Nick Alejandro and once by senior lineman Calvin Fance.

Pecikonis led the Rams in return yardage, collecting five punt returns for 65 yards (13 yards per return) and two kickoff returns for 67 yards (33.5 yards per return). He ended the night with 225 all-purpose yards.

Angelo State limited the Bulldogs to just 233 yards of offense, including just 12 yards on the ground. Day ended the night with 221 yards on 24-of-41 passing with one touchdown and three interceptions. John Haggerty led SWOSU with five catches for 85 yards while Daniel Barwick had seven carries for 33 yards for the Bulldogs.

The Rams hit the road next weekend as they visit East Central in a Lone Star Conference crossover game. Game time is 6 p.m. at Norris Field in Ada, Okla.
