Game 1 Final Box // Game 2 Final Box
AUSTIN –
Alix Dean pushed her hitting streak to seven-consecutive games and has recorded at least one RBI in six-straight contests to help lead the No. 10 Angelo State softball team to a split in a nonconference doubleheader against St. Edward's at Daniels Field in Tuesday.
In game one, St. Edward's (23-22) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after scoring runs in the first and second inning. Angelo State (34-6) was unable to stop the Hilltoppers' offensive production, as SEU plated four more runs in the third inning to take a 6-0 advantage entering the fifth.
With one out in the top of the fifth, ASU's
Kaycee Taylor doubled down the left-field line. After a fielding error by St. Edward's, ASU had runners at the corners and a two-time All-American due up next. Dean delivered for the 'Belles, ripping an RBI single to centerfield. Elsa Apo followed suit with an RBI double to centerfield to make it a 6-2 game. ASU's offensive production would sputter throughout the remainder of the game, and eventually drop the contest, 10-2, in six innings.
In the nightcap, Angelo State gave up three runs over the first two innings, but the pitching staff settled down to throw five-consecutive scoreless innings and earn a 5-3 victory.
“This has always been a tough place to play,” said head coach
Travis Scott. “I talked with Alix and Kaycee, and neither one of them remember coming here and leaving with a sweep. It's always a tough place to play, and (Tuesday) was no different. Leaving here with a split is par for the course.”
Mary Kate McKay and
Claire Molina split duties in the circle, as McKay tossed the first 3.1 innings before handing the ball over to Molina for the final 3.2. Molina, the junior from San Bernardino, Calif., picked up the win and is now 17-3 on the season.
The 'Belles found themselves in a 3-1 hole entering the top of the third, but began to dig themselves out. ASU's Dean hit an RBI single up the middle to make it a 3-2 game, which was followed by teammate
DeeshanaLynn Tafiti's seventh home run of the season in the top of the fourth inning to tie the contest, 3-3.
A Hilltopper's error proved to be costly in the fifth inning, as the Rambelles scored two unearned runs and left Austin with a 5-3 win in game two.
Up next for Angelo State is a conference series against West Texas A&M in Canyon April 15-16. The teams will play a doubleheader Friday beginning at 4 p.m., at Lady Buffs Yard with the second game to follow. The two teams will return to the diamond Saturday for a noon start time.
