SAN MARCOS – Some might call it beginner's luck, but Angelo State junior Debbie Ohl threw the javelin in competition for the first time since high school to finish third, and Theresa Sue finished fourth in her first collegiate 400-meter hurdles at the Texas State Bobcat Invitational Saturday. The efforts were two of 15 combined top-five finishes by the Rams and Rambelles in the final regular season meet before the Lone Star Conference Championships next weekend in Stephenville.

Ohl, a member of the volleyball team at Angelo State, was spotted wearing a Trinity High School track t-shirt in the hallway earlier this spring by ASU track assistant Tom Dibbern and, after a brief conversation which included permission from Belle volleyball coach Chuck Waddington, agreed to pick up the javelin for the Rambelles when spring volleyball ended. The Hutchinson, Kan. native, who was disappointed with her throw Saturday, tossed the javelin 111-11 (34.12m) – good enough for 12th-best in the LSC – with less than a week of practice.

Sue, a sophomore from Fort Worth, won the third heat and was fourth overall with her time of 1:03.74 in her first ever 400 hurdles race. Already among the Lone Star Conference's top-five performers in the 200- and 400-meter dash, Sue's time was the second fastest 400-meter hurdles time this season in the league and 0.74 seconds off an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark.

Angelo State did manage one provisional qualifying mark Saturday as Isidro Garcia finished third in the 400-meter dash in a time of 47.25 seconds, close behind former teammate James Howell who won the event in 46.27 seconds running unattached. Garcia's mark improved on his previous provisional and LSC leading time and was the eighth-fastest time in the country this season.

The No. 5 Rams put up seven other top-five marks at the meet while the Rambelles contributed the other seven. Angelo State will travel to Stephenville next weekend (May 6-8) for the Lone Star Conference Track and Field Championships. The women will begin defense of their LSC title while the men look to unseat Abilene Christian when competition starts Friday with the heptathlon and decathlon events.
