AUSTIN, Texas – Although a heavy fog delayed the final round at Grey Rock Golf Club by nearly 40 minutes, it did not prevent
Courtney Rutledge from turning in the third best score of the day on Tuesday. Under gray skies and through a steady mist, the sophomore fired a 4-over-par 75 to finish in seventh place at the St. Edward's Invite, which helped move the Angelo State women's golf team into a tie for 10th place.
As a team, the Rambelles improved 26 strokes from day one and finished the par-71, 6,060-yard course with a two-round total of 348-322—670. This marks the Belles fifth consecutive top-10 finish of the 2011-12 season.
Rutledge was the Belles' top performer, picking up her first career top-10 finish. The Monahans native trimmed seven strokes from her first-round score and ended with a 157 total (82-75). The sophomore led the field in par-3 average, finishing at even par.
Solid ball striking by
Ashley Bartholomew resulted in 13 fairways and 12 greens in regulation en route to a final-round score of 77. The freshman finished with a two-round total of 89-77—166 to earn a piece of 31st place. All seven Rambelle golfers improved from Monday's round; however, Bartholomew showed the biggest jump after shaving 12 strokes off her previous round.
“Both Courtney and Ashley used the experience from yesterday to put themselves in a position to score today,” Angelo State women's golf coach Kathleen Price said. “They stayed out of the sand and gave themselves an opportunity to post a good score.”
Abby Bobo,
Krista Czarnecki and
Maury McCormick all turned in cards of 85 to round out the Rambelle scoring. Three shots separated the trio, as Bobo shot 88-85—173 (T-52), Czarnecki posted 89-85—174 (T-59) and McCormick concluded with 90-85—175 (T-62).
Competing as individuals for Angelo State was
Makenzie Stone and
Taylor Griffin. Stone registered a two-round total of 177 (91-86) for a piece of 71st place, while Grifffin totaled 185 (96-89, T-81).
Tarleton State earned team honors, as the TexAnns shot a 300-306—606, while Sonoma State University's Spencer Heller (76-71—147) took individual accolades. Heller's even-par 71 in the final day secured her a one-shot victory over TSU's Sharon Lau (72-76—148).
Up next for the Rambelles is a trip to Wichita Falls March 19-20 for the Midwestern Invitational at Champions Course at Weeks Park.
