Game 1 :: Game 2
AUSTIN, Texas – Mary Kate McKay and
Claire Molina threw back-to-back complete games to help guide the Angelo State softball team to a pair of non-conference wins over St. Edward's at Diane Daniels Field on Tuesday. The No. 8 Rambelles (19-3) earned a 4-1 victory in Game 1 followed by a 2-1 win in Game 2.
“Mary Kate and Claire threw the ball extremely well for us (Tuesday),” Angelo State head coach
Travis Scott said. “Mary Kate kept the ball low and hit her spots, while Claire had a lot of velocity from start to finish.”
McKay (9-1) took the ball in Game 1 and tossed her second consecutive complete-game, one-hitter. Although she did not have any strikeouts, the Madill, Okla., native kept the ball low, forcing 13 Hilltopper groundouts. St. Edward's (11-10) only run came in the fourth inning which was unearned.
The Belles entered the top of the fifth trailing 1-0, but would score four runs in the final three innings to secure a 4-1 victory.
Lauren Smith picked up a painful RBI to tie the game after the junior was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score
Peyton Hughes. Angelo State tacked on two more in the sixth, thanks to RBI singles from
Carly Peters and
Brittney Davis.
After McKay retired the Hilltoppers in order in the fifth and sixth inning, the Rambelles plated their final run in the seventh. With a runner on second,
Kacie Easley hit her sixth double of the season to score Smith from second.
In Game 2, Molina (10-2) struck out a game-high six batters and allowed just three hits en route to her 10th win of the season.
The Hilltopper's scored the game's first run in the second inning, but ASU would tie it in the fourth. Easley led off with a triple down the right-field line followed by a
DeeshanaLynn Tafiti walk. With runners at the corners,
Elsamartina Apo hit an RBI single to left center. Apo, a senior from Ewa Beach, Hawaii, went 3-for-6 on the day and raised her batting average to .482 on the season.
After two scoreless innings, the teams entered the seventh inning tied, 1-1. Walters led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. The junior from Odessa would then score on a double down the right field line by
Morgan Spearman. The one-run cushion was all Molina needed to help secure a 2-1 win.
Up next for Angelo State is a Lone Star Conference showdown against Eastern New Mexico. The two teams will meet in Portales, N.M., on March 9, for a doubleheader with the first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
