Belles in 10th Place After 18 at Tarleton State Invite

First Round Leaderboard

GRANBURY, Texas – The Angelo State Rambelle golf team fired a first-round score of 321 (+33) on Monday to finish the day in 10th-place at the Tarleton State Invitational. The second round of the 14-team tournament will conclude on Tuesday at the par 72, 5,810-yard course at Harbor Lake Country Club.

Taylor Griffin sat on top of the team leaderboard as she shot an 5-over par and was in a tie for 24th. The junior was consistently hitting the fairways and showed a lot of poise as the Walker, La. native carded her lowest first-day score of the season.

“(Taylor) had a beautiful birdie on No. 3,” Rambelles head coach Kathleen Price said.  “She stuck a shot on her approach and made a real nice birdie putt. She hit a lot of fairways today, and she was really able to make some things happen.

“I'm proud of the work that she's put in, and it was good to see her play. It should be some really good momentum for her for tomorrow and perhaps the conference tournament.”

Freshman Abby Bobo fired a 39 on the front and back nine for a score of 78 and currently sits in a tie for 28th place. Junior Maury McCormick carded a 10-over-par while sophomore Courtney Rutledge improved by two strokes after the turn and scored an 84 (+12). Krista Czarnecki ended her day in tie at 58th with an 86 (+14).

“This is a really interesting golf course,” Price added.  “You can hit beautiful shots and if you're a couple yards too long you're in the water. I saw that not only with our girls, but with the teams we were with today.”

Angelo State was paired up with Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Commerce and is ahead of the Cardinals by seven shots while being only a single stroke off of the Lions who are in ninth place.

St. Edward's is the overall leader for the tournament with a score of 296 (+8) and is ahead of second-place Tarleton State by one stroke. The TexAnns Sharon Lau (37-34 – 71) paces the event in the individual standings after firing in red figures on Monday.

Price had a lot to look forward to as ASU will conclude its regular season schedule tomorrow and then prep for Lone Star Conference Championships next week.

“I'm anxious for Taylor to build on this for tomorrow and for next week and I think Abby is the same way,” Price said.  “I'm pleased with our ball striking, I'm pleased with the fact that we're not giving up on ourselves and I really look for good things to happen for tomorrow and for next week."

The Rambelles tee off for the second round at 9:12 a.m. Tuesday morning.
