Kara Edwards Wins LSC Defender of the Week Honor

Kara Edwards

SAN ANGELO – Battling for possessions and helping the Angelo State soccer team limit the offensive attacks of opponents has earned Kara Edwards the Lone Star Conference's Defender of the Week award.

Edwards (Bastrop HS) was instrumental in holding Midwestern State to one goal in the Rambelles' 1-1 tie last Friday and in securing ASU's second shutout win of the season with a 1-0 win over Abilene Christian last Sunday.

“She has been a very reliable defender for us all season,” ASU head coach Travis McCorkle said. “She plays really physical but she does not foul a lot. She reads the game very well and does a great job of anticipating what's about to happen. She competes and has a quiet intensity about her.”

The junior, who missed the last half of her freshman season because of injury, returned last season to play in 14 games as a sophomore. She has started each game this season and has helped ASU limit opponents to 8.2 shots per game and to seven goals through six games. She also had the assist of Ashley Exford's goal against Midwestern State.

The LSC weekly award is the first in Edward's career at ASU and follows goalkeeper Danielle Edwards winning it after the first week of the season.

Edwards and the Rambelles return to action at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Texas A&M-Commerce before playing at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Texas Woman's.
