Rambelles Take Down No. 11 Colorado Mines 13-0

BOX SCORE

CANYON, Texas –
The Angelo State softball team defeated No. 11 Colorado Mines 13-0 in six innings in the first game of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional held at Schaeffer Park. The Rambelles will play the winner of West Texas A&M and St. Edward's at 1 p.m. tomorrow.

The Rambelles (36-16) used an outstanding pitching performance by Mary Kate McKay as she limited the Orediggers (40-6-1) to only five hits. ASU's offense responded with 14 hits, three home runs and scoring 11 of its 13 runs with two outs on the board.

Through the first four innings of the game McKay and Colorado Mines Kelly Unkrich were holding both teams scoreless. Unkrich entered the game at 26-1 and was holding teams to a 0.82 earned-run average. ASU had only two hits going into the fifth while McKay had given up four hits.

Ambra Hill used her speed by hitting a chopper to the shortstop and beat it out to lead off the fifth inning. Kacie Easley was able to bring home the first run of the game after Hill stole second base for her 24th stolen base of the season. Easley hit a single to left field to score Hill and put ASU on the board at 1-0.

Morgan Spearman was able to reach on a fielder's choice and pinch runner Amanda Weaver juked around the tag at second base to put two runners on base. Rachel Moore drew a two-out walk to bring up Darian Dunn.

The freshman sat on a change up and drove it to left field fence for a grand slam for a 5-0 advantage after five innings. It was her sixth of the year and second grand slam of the season.

After a scoreless bottom of the fifth the Rambelles offense continued to roll. Hill stepped back to the plate and took a ball to left center for her second home run of the season to make it 6-0.

Easley connected with her third single of the day and Lauren Smith followed it up with a single of her own. Easley went 4-of-5 at the plate.

With two outs in the innings the Rambelles rallied again for the second consecutive inning. Carly Peters and Rachel Moore both hit RBI singles to score Easley and Smith before Colorado Mines changed pitchers.

Unkrich, who had only given up 23 earned runs all season, surrendered 10 earned runs in five and two-thirds innings of work.

Dunn welcomed Ashley Goletz to the game with another home run to left field and extended the lead to 11-0. The second baseman finished the day with a game and season high seven RBI's.

Brittney Davis followed it up with triple to right field and would score along with Lanie Robinson on a Hill single. Hill went 3-of-4 with two RBI's.

McKay would sit the Orediggeres down in order in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the run-rule victory. The junior moves to 14-10 on the season and it is her second shutout of the year.

The Rambelles will play tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Schaffer Park. The game will be broadcasted locally on 1260AM KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call.
