Angelo State basketball to support 'It's On Us' sexual assault awareness campaign

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State basketball programs will be showing their support of the "It's On Us" campaign on Wednesday night during the doubleheader against Midwestern State at the Junell Center in an effort to open a discussion about sexual assault.

"It's On Us" is a national campaign designed to change the culture of campus sexual assault by taking ownership of the problem and opening up a dialogue on an issue which many internalize out of fear, shame and blame. Individuals are encouraged to make a personal commitment to help keep women and men safe from sexual assault and to be a part of the solution.

"Sexual assault is a big problem in our society," ASU head coach Chris Beard said. "One of the first steps in solving a problem is education and awareness. The 'It's On Us' campaign is a great cause. Our team is proud to be a part of this effort."

T-shirts with the "It's On Us" logo will be given out at the basketball games and students and fans are encouraged to go to www.itsonus.org to take the pledge. Angelo State director of student services, Audrey Wilson, has spearheaded the campaign here at ASU and her team will be working throughout the semester to spread the "It's On Us" message throughout campus.

"We want to let students know that they can have an impact by taking a stand against violence by getting involved in the various programs we are sponsoring throughout the spring semester," Wilson said. "We want each student to understand he or she has the power to make a difference by holding themselves and their friends accountable for their actions.  We don't want students to put themselves in a dangerous situation but if they notice someone doing something they know is wrong, we encourage them to say something or tell someone and help keep their friends safe."

"Sexual assault is something that cannot be tolerated in our society," ASU Director of Athletics Sean Johnson added. "We are happy to partner with the 'It's On Us' campaign to bring awareness to this issue."
