Jim Hess led the Rams to the 1978 NAIA National Championship and ASU's only perfect campaign. His Rams went 14-0 that memorable season to give Angelo State its first team national championship since becoming a four-year institution.
Hess was ASU's head coach from 1974-81 and amassed a 65-23-3 during his tenure, for a .731 winning percentage. During his eight seasons, Hess mentored 41 first-team All-LSC selections and had eight different players earn All-America honors. In 1977, he was honored as the LSC's Coach of the Year.
