Angelo State senior offensive lineman Josh Hammerquist has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Second Team, announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Hammerquist became the fifth member of the Ram football program to be named Academic All-American.
A native of Flower Mound, Hammerquist closed out his playing career earlier this month as a three-year starter on the Ram offensive line. He started all 10 games as a senior, starting at three different positions on the line due to injuries, and helped ASU rank fourth in sacks allowed the Lone Star Conference, giving up just 14 sacks on the season. The Marcus High School product was a two-time Academic All-LSC South Division pick for the Rams during his career.
Previous Academic All-Americans for the Rams were Steve Schwartz (second team, 1983), Greg Stokes (second team, 1994 & 1995), Kyle Kirk (first team, 1998) and John Burk (second team, 2000). In all, Hammerquist became the 23rd Angelo State student-athlete to be named Academic All-American.
To be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a nominee must hold at least a 3.20 grade point average, be at least a sophomore and must have spent a minimum of one academic year at the nominating institution. In addition, the nominee must be a starter or key contributor to his team.
Hammerquist was advanced to the Academic All-America ballot after earning First Team Academic All-District honors by ESPN The Magazine earlier this month. In addition to Hammerquist, the Rams had the second team picks at the district level in juniors Michael McLeod and Terrell Lee and sophomore Pete Parker.
