The Angelo State women's basketball team fell to 0-2 for the first time since the 2001-02 season as the 'Belles dropped a 66-62 decision at Incarnate Word Sunday afternoon.
With Incarnate Word (2-0) up three points with nine seconds left in the game, 'Belle sophomore guard
Alix Flores drained a three-pointer to knot the game, 62-62. However, an ASU foul put the Cardinals to the line with five seconds and Nikki Brown put UIW up for good with two free throws. The Cardinals would get a break-away jumper from Edricka Thomas at the buzzer.
Sophomore guard
Camille Perkins led the 'Belles in scoring with 17 points, hitting 4-of-5 shots from the field, including her only three-point attempt, and shooting a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line. Senior center
Ann Parks and senior forward
Leina Braxton each had eight points. Parks ended the afternoon with a game-high nine rebounds.
Reeling from a 73-59 loss to St. Mary's on Saturday, the 'Belles got off to another slow start as they did not score for more than four minutes against UIW. After falling behind 8-0, however, ASU responded and eventually took the lead, 19-18, with 6:42 left before the break on a three-pointer by Braxton. The 'Belles would end the half with the momentum, taking a 38-30 lead at the intermission.
ASU would extend its cushion to as many as 12 points early in the final frame before the Cardinals would begin picking away at the lead. UIW regained a one-point advantage, 54-53, with 5:03 left in the contest on a jumper by Nia Torru. The two teams would then trade the lead four more times before Flores' three-pointer in the final moments.
As a team, the 'Belles shot 54 percent from the floor in the first half, but hit just 8-of-23 shots (35%) in the second half. ASU was out-rebounded by the Cardinals, 38-31.
ASU will play its home opener Tuesday night as the 'Belles host St. Edward's at 6 p.m. at the Junell Center.
