The Angelo State women's basketball team slipped to 0-3 after falling to St. Edward's, 67-58, Tuesday night in the 'Belles' home opener.
ASU shot just 32.1 percent from the field and committed 23 turnovers as it fell to 0-3 to start a season for the first time since the 2001-02 campaign. The 'Belles hit just 18-of-56 shots from the field and only 5-of-18 attempts from three points range.
St. Edward's (2-1) jumped out to an early lead, grabbing a 13-5 advantage by the 13:43 mark in the first half after a jumper by Sara Head. The 'Belles then battled back into the contest, cutting the SEU lead to as few as two points, 26-24, with just under four minutes to go in the half as senior forward
Lauren Weishuhn capped a 6-0 spurt with a put back. The Hilltoppers would respond, however, with an 8-2 run to end the period and nabbed a 34-26 lead at the break.
The Hilltoppers grabbed their first double-digit lead with 15:33 left in the game as Haley Tidwell's jumper gave SEU at 42-31 lead. St. Ed's would extend its lead to as many as 13 points before the 'Belles would mount their final comeback attempt.
With 9:03 left in the contest, freshman center
Paige Weishuhn capped an 8-0 run by ASU to cut the deficit down to three points, 47-44. But a quick foul would put SEU's Kelli Payton to the line for two free throws to give the Hilltoppers a five-point cushion and the 'Belles would get no closer the rest of the night.
The 'Belles were led in scoring by both Weishuhn and senior center
Ann Parks, who both finished the night with 11 points. Sophomore guard
Camille Perkins and junior guard
Casie Adams each added eight points. Parks led the 'Belles with nine rebounds, ending the game one board shy of her second "double-double" in three games.
For SEU, Tidwell scored a game-high 17 points while Sophia Holguin, Jasmine Parr and Payton all had 12 points. Holguin and Head led the Hilltoppers with seven rebounds each. St. Edward's shot 40.9 percent (18-of-44) for the game, going 0-for-6 from three-point range, and hit 31-of-39 shots from the foul line.
Next up for the 'Belles is a trip to Durango, Colo., as they will compete in a classic hosted by Fort Lewis over the weekend. ASU will play host Fort Lewis at 7 p.m. Friday night and then play Mesa State at 5 p.m. Saturday. All times Central.
