The Angelo State women's basketball team (1-4) picked up its first win of the season Saturday night as the 'Belles downed Mesa State, 92-70, in Durango, Colo.
Senior center Ann Parks sparked the 'Belles to the victory as she hit 7-of-9 shots from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from the free-throw line for game-best 17 points. Junior guard Christie Rasmussen added 13 points while junior forward Casie Adams scored nine points. Senior center Lauren Weishuhn scored eight points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
The 'Belles scored the opening bucket of the game, using a jumper by junior forward Tiffany Hardwell, and trailed on just one occasion early in the first half as they cruised to their largest margin of victory in 17 games, dating back to last season. ASU quickly extended its lead to double digits, taking a 17-6 lead with 14:06 left in the first half on another jumper by Hardwell, capping a 7-0 Angelo State run.
ASU opened up its lead to as many as 24 points in the period before eventually taking a 19-point lead, 47-28, into the locker room. After scoring the first basket of the second half, the 'Belles never led by less than 21 points for the remainder of the contest.
The 'Belles shot 52 percent from the field, connecting on 36-of-69 shots from floor, and out-rebounded Mesa State (1-1), by a 48-36 margin. The Mavericks shot just 37 percent as a team from the field.
Angelo State will return home Tuesday night as the 'Belles host Incarnate Word at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena. Game time is 6 p.m.
