The University Interscholastic League (UIL) announced Thursday that the Region 1-AAAA Track & Field Meet has been rescheduled, but will now take place in Odessa instead of San Angelo.
The UIL made the decision Thursday afternoon to relocate the event to Odessa College after opting not to work with ASU officials regarding alternate dates. The meet was originally scheduled for May 1-2 at the LeGrand Sports Complex, but on Wednesday, Apr. 29, the UIL made an announcement that all regional meets would be cancelled. On Thursday, Apr. 30, the association announced that the 20 regional track meets would now take place between May 12-23.
Angelo State was asked to host the 1-AAAA meet on May 15-16; however, a conflict with ASU graduation would not allow the university to host during those dates. The ASU athletic administration offered to host the event May 12-13, but the UIL chose to move the event to guarantee weekend dates. The UIL will host the Region 1-A track meet on May 12-13 at South Plains College.
"We offered to host during the week, so we are disappointed that UIL chose to move the event to Odessa because they were able to host on May 15-16," said ASU Director of Athletics Kathleen Brasfield. "The decision to change cities will definitely have a negative impact for our hotels and restaurants. It would have been nice if UIL had accepted our offer of May 12-13 since those dates were acceptable in another region."
Angelo State has hosted the Region 1-AAAA for more than 20 years.
