Coming off its first postseason appearance in four seasons, the Angelo State volleyball team has been picked to finish sixth in the Lone Star Conference as announced at the league's Media Day Thursday.
The Rambelles, who went 20-14 last fall and advanced to the LSC Tournament as the event's No. 7 seed, gathered 349 points in the poll as voted upon by the league's coaches, sports information directors and media representatives.
West Texas A&M was chosen as the league's favorite to win the title in 2009 with 31 of 38 first-place votes for 524 points. Abilene Christian was second in the voting with four first-place votes for 478 points and Tarleton State was third with three first-place votes and 427 points. Midwestern State was fourth with 384 points and Texas Woman's was fifth with 352 points.
Central Oklahoma was picked seventh with 314 points, Texas A&M-Commerce eighth with 258 points, Southeastern Oklahoma ninth with 246 points, Cameron tenth with 198 points, Texas A&M-Kingsville 11th with 175 points, East Central 12th with 133 points, Southwestern Oklahoma 14th with 104 points and Eastern New Mexico 15th with 48 points.
WT's Laura Prinsen was tabbed the LSC's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year while teammate Katie Rickwartz was named the league's Setter of the Year. ACU's Shawna Hines was named the league's Defensive Player of the Year and
The Rambelles open the season Thursday, Aug. 27, as they host New Mexico Highlands at 7 p.m. at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena. ASU will then host the Angelo Retina/ASU Invitational on Aug. 28-29.
