Angelo State's Aisha Adams had little expectations that her arrival in San Angelo last fall would lead her overseas and to the Thorpe Cup, an international multi-event competition between the United States and Germany.
The Covington, Tenn., native earned her right to compete internationally earlier this summer with an eighth place finish in the heptathlon at the U.S. Nationals in Eugene, Ore. Adams and 10 other representatives from the United States competed Aug. 8-9 at the annual event, this year held in Marburg, Germany.
Adams was the second-highest scoring American in the heptathlon with 5,616 points, 20 points shy of her personal best set in Oregon in June. That mark is the third-highest point in the event in school history behind her mark at the U.S. Nationals (5,636) and school-record holder Amber Miller (5,670, 2003).
Any questions of nerves for the NCAA Division II National Champion were answered in the opening event Saturday as Adams recorded a personal-best 13.77 in the 100-meter hurdles. Adams won her heat with the fourth-best time in the field.
She followed that performance with a high jump of 5'8 1/2", the fifth-best performance in that event. She closed out the first day of competition with throw of 36'8 1/2" in the shot put and a time of 24.98 in the 200-meter dash. Only five of the 15 competitors recorded a better time in the 200 that Adams.
Adams opened day two with long jump of 19'11" and then recorded a javelin throw of 109'3" and completed the competition with a time of 2:22.11 in the 800-meter run.
USA's Liz Roehrig, former student-athlete at the University of Minnesota, took the title as she finished the seven events with a tally of 5,990 points.
