Three members of the Angelo State track and field teams were recognized Thursday as the Lone Star Conference announced its first Track & Field Athletes of the Week.
The Rambelles swept the female honors as senior Celethia Byrd was named Women's Track Athlete of the Week while freshman Summer Sutherland was honored as Women's Field Athlete of the Week. Junior Tyler Orlando earned Men's Field Athlete of the Week honors for the Rams.
Orlando, a native of Bangs, collected ASU's only automatic qualifying mark so far for the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championships over the weekend as he won the javelin throw at the Trinity Invitational with a personal-best toss of 213-11, the ninth-best javelin throw in ASU history. The Baird High School product was an All-American last season in the javelin, placing seventh at the 2009 NCAA D-II Meet.
Byrd, a native of Austin, has already provisionally qualified for the 2010 NCAA D-II Meet in three events through just two weeks of the season. In the opening meet of the season, the Reagan High School product recorded provisional marks in the 100 (11.97) and the 200 (24.20) on Feb. 27 at the Incarnate Word Invitational. This past Saturday at Trinity, Byrd added her third provisional mark of the season as she recorded the fourth-best time in school history in the 400-meter dash at 55.34. Byrd was a three-time All-American for the Rambelles in 2009, placing seventh in both the 100 and 200 and part of ASU's 4x400-meter relay.
Sutherland, a native of Crane, has made a quick splash as ASU, winning the pole vault in both her meets so far this season. In her debut as a Rambelle at Incarnate Word, Sutherland won the pole vault with a provisional-qualifying mark of 11-9.75. This past Saturday, Sutherland bettered her provisional mark in the event with a vault of 12-0 at Trinity.
The Rams and Rambelles are back in action today as they compete at the Tarleton State Relays. ASU will host its annual Spring Break Multis next week, Mar. 18-19 at the LeGrand Sports Complex.
