Gray Auto Qualifies in the Heptathlon at Spring Break Multi Meet

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State track & field programs combined for one NCAA Division II automatic-qualifying mark and four NCAA Division II provisional-qualifying marks to conclude the ASU Spring Break Multi meet held at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field.

"What a great two days we had," ASU head track & field coach James Reid said. "We accomplished what we hoped to get accomplished. With the women coming right out indoors but still wanting to do it to hopefully hit a mark to get us to the national meet. It was a great meet the two guys as well. I'm very excited where this group and hopefully the rest of our kids will feed off this going into our meet this weekend."

Just five days after competing in the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, Jordan Gray secured a spot in the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the heptathlon. The senior scored a personal-best score of 5,229 points and placed third overall. Gray started day two with a NCAA Division II provisional mark of 19'-2.50" (5.85-meters) to score 804 points. She followed it up with a personal-best throw of 91'-8" (27.94-meters) and capped off the meet with a PR of 2:18.16 in the 800-meters. She is currently No. 2 nationally in the heptathlon and No. 1 in the long jump.

"Jordan came through big in the two days," Reid said. "It was great to see her punch her ticket to nationals."

Jasmine Ambowode was in an identical circumstance as Gray after competing at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships. The junior scored a NCAA Division II provisional-qualifying mark of 4,849 points to finish in fourth. Ambowode is now ranked No. 4 nationally in the heptathlon. She started the day with a jump of 18'-00.50" (5.50-meters). A personal-best mark of 78'-11" (24.06-meters) was next in the javelin and Ambowode's meet ended with a 2:15.22 in the 800-meters. Her score of 4,849 points places her at No. 4 in NCAA Division II.

"Jasmine came through and scored better than last year's spring break meet," Reid said. "We are excited where she is coming off indoor nationals."

Morgan Rodgers scored 3,813 points in her first career heptathlon placing 11th overall. She recorded a long jump of 16'-8" (5.08-meters). The freshman threw the javelin 61'-2" (18.64-meters) and ran a 2:26.52 in the 800-meters in the final event.

"Morgan, a young freshman, was able to get some PR's in event and got the full effect of a complete multi event," Reid said.

Seth Pearson recorded three personal records on the final day of the decathlon. He ran the 110-meter hurdles in "a time of 15.31 and threw the discus 116'-8" (35.57-meters). The senior ended the day with a bang as he recorded personal bests in the final three events. The senior cleared 13'-11' (4.24-meters) in the pole vault and then threw 148'-7" (45.29-meters) in the javelin. The Big Spring native clocked a personal best of 4:46.07 in the 1500-meters.Pearson is No. 1 nationally in the decathlon going into the weekend.
