Seven-Run Fourth Lifts Rambelles

The No. 4-ranked Angelo State softball team (44-8) scored seven runs in the fourth frame to nab a 10-5 win over St. Edward's in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament Friday at the ASU Softball Complex.

Trailing 3-2 entering the bottom of the fourth, the Rambelles opened the inning with back-to-back bunt singles by juniors Sarah DeMoss and Nicole Smith. After a sacrifice bunt by junior Kristen Frye and a walk by freshman Sandy James, senior Laura Lopez evened the game, 3-3, with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. The Rambelles then got an RBI single by senior Macy Baker, an infield single by sophomore Alix Dean and two-RBI hits by juniors Megan Pumphrey and April Haywood. ASU capped the fourth-inning scoring with an RBI single by DeMoss to give the Rambelles a 9-3 cushion.

The Hilltoppers (41-20) added a run in the top of the fifth on a solo home run by Courtney Lavender, but ASU responded with another run in the bottom of the frame as Smith scored on a wild pitch from SEU hurler Paige Sandahl to regain a six-run lead. St. Edward's would later add a run in the seventh.

Junior right-hander Chelsea Nelson (26-4) picked up the win giving up three earned runs on five hits in six innings of work. Nelson fanned 10 Hilltoppers and issued three walks. DeMoss ended the game 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while Baker and Dean each went 2-for-4.

For St. Edward's, Diana Cezeaux (16-11) was handed the loss in relief of Sandahl. Sandhal tossed the first two-plus innings before giving way to Cezeaux. Sandahl would re-enter the game with two outs in the fourth after the Rambelles took their lead. Sandahl gave up one earned run on four hits in 4.1 innings of work with seven strikeouts. Cezeaux gave up seven earned runs on eight hits in 1.2 innings with one strikeout.

The Rambelles will now face Emporia State at 2 p.m. Saturday in a winner's bracket game. St. Edward's will meet Nebraska-Omaha in a losers' bracket contest Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
