Nebraska-Omaha scored five runs in the first two innings and never looked back as the Mavericks downed Emporia State, 5-3, in an elimination game at the 2009 NCAA Division II South Central Region Tournament.
UNO (45-16) opened the scoring in the top of the first as lead-off hitter Treighton Yates scored on a Hornet throwing error. Emporia State answered with a run in the bottom of the first, off of a solo home run by Miranda Campbell, her 11th of the season, to tie the game, 1-1.
In the top of the second, the Mavericks exploded for four runs, using a pair of home runs to take control of the contest. Julia Krejci led off the frame with her sixth long ball of the season. Three batters later, Katelyn Hinton gave UNO a 4-1 lead with a two-run shot to leftfield, scoring Ashley Lynch. It was Hinton's eight home run of the season. The Mavericks added another run later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Lindsey Slocum.
Emporia State (43-16) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on a two-run homer by Jill Peters, her second of the tournament and ninth of the season, but the Hornets could not get any closer.
Slocum (15-3) picked up the win for UNO giving up three earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Megan Dennis (23-8) was handed the loss for the Hornets, giving up up three earned runs in 1.1 innings of work.
The Mavericks will now face No. 4-ranked Angelo State at 1 p.m. Sunday in the tournament title game. UNO will have to win two games over the Rambelles to advance to the Super Regional.
