As the 2009 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships continued into the second day of competition, seven more national champions were crowned.
The final events in the heptathlon and the decathlon opened the second day of competition with two Texas schools picking up national champions. Host Angelo State's Aisha Adams won the heptathlon with 5,586 points while Abilene Christian's Camille Vandendriessche claimed his third straight national title in the decathlon with 7,674 points.
Lincoln's AnnaKay Campbelle placed second in the heptathlon with 5,343 points while Linda Rainwater of UC San Diego was third with 5,303 points. On the men's side, Angelo State's Ryan McWilliams was second with 7,297 points and Wayne Durham from Adams State was third with 7,086 points.
In the men's shot put, Ashland's Kurt Roberts collected the national title with a throw of 61' 7.5", that coming in his final throw of the prelims. Northwest Missouri State's Ben McKim was second with a throw of 58' 9.25" and Brian Allen from Pittsburg State was third with a toss of 58' 3.75".
For the women, it was Angelo State's Adree Lakey taking home the gold as she tossed a personal-best 52'10" in the opening round of the finals to claim her third national title in as many years. Lakey won the national crown in the hammer in 2007 and the discus last year. Andrea Horban from Indianapolis placed second with a throw of 50'6.75" and Ashland's Elise Bottarini was third at 47'2.25".
Joe Kindred from St. Augustine's claimed the title in the men's high jump with a leap of 7' 2.25". Western State's Oliver Harsanyi was second (7'1") and Chris Copeland from St. Augustine's third (6'11.75").
Fort Valley State's Antioneete Oglesby claimed the championship in the triple jump with a leap of 40'9.75 in her final jump. St. Cloud State's Heather Miller placed second with a jump of 40'7.25" while Brittanie Roldan of Central Missouri was third with a jump of 40'6.75".
In the women's pole vault, Minnesota State-Mankato's Katelin Rains smashed the meet record with a vault of 13'7". Rains broke the previous mark of 13' 1.75" set by California State-Stanislaus' Chaunte Mitchell in 2005. Dianna Noonan of Grand Valley State finished in second at 13'3" and Jennifer Hensel, the defending champion, placed third at 12'11".
Also on Friday were preliminaries of the men's and women's 200-meter dash, men's and women's 800-meter dash, women's 100-meter hurdles, men's 110-meter hurdles, women's and men's 5,000-meter run and the women's and men's 4x400-meter relays.
Host Angelo State leads the women's competition with 40 points with Lincoln in second place with 18 points and Grand Valley State in third with 17 points. On the men's side, Abilene Christian leads with 25 points while St. Augustine's sits second with 22 points and Central Missouri is third with 20 points.
Action wraps up Saturday with the remaining field event finals and running finals. The final day begins at 11 a.m. (Central) with the men's javelin, followed by the women's javelin at 1:30 p.m. Running finals begin at 5:10 p.m. with the women's and men's steeplechase.
