Angelo State’s offense coordinator and quarterback’s coach Drew Dallas will be entering his third season as coordinator and his eighth overall at ASU.
Dallas and the Rams led the nation with 84.5 plays per game in the 2017 season and topped the Lone Star Conference with 494.1 yards per game, 25.27 first downs per game and a 44.50 third-down conversion percentage. A Salina, Kansas native, Dallas helped guide Jake Faber to throw for 1,905 yards and Charlie Rotherham another 1,553 yards to make the Rams the only NCAA Division II program to have a pair of quarterbacks to throw for over 1,500 yards in the 2017 season. ASU’s offense was a national top-10 in three categories under Dallas and saw wide receiver Donovan Thompson earn first-team All-LSC honors and set a new program record with 13 receptions against Texas A&M-Commerce and then 192 in his career.
During his first season as offensive coordinator in 2016, Josh Stevens became the first running back since 2008 to rush for at least 1,000 yards and just the eighth player in ASU history to accomplish the feat. The 180.0 rushing yards per game is the fourth most in the last 10 years for the Rams. The Rams also recorded the single most points (70) in a game in program history during the 2016 season. Stevens would run for 991 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2017 to lead the rushing attack that gained 176 yards per game.
Dallas has been an integral part of the offensive staff at Angelo State since 2011 where he began as a graduate assistant coaching tight ends and then was promoted to assistant coach in 2012. He worked with the wide receivers from 2012-2015 while also serving as the recruiting coordinator.
“Drew has been with us since our first season at Angelo State and is knowledgeable and comfortable in our offense,” ASU head coach Will Wagner said. “He has shown that he is prepared to be our offensive coordinator and I am confident in his ability to continue to build on the success we have had.”
In his tenure at Angelo State, Dallas coached some of the most prolific receivers in ASU history in C.J. Akins, Dakarai Pecikonis and Thompson. Thompson, a 2015 LSC All-Conference first team selection, set the ASU single season record for receiving yards with 1,133 yards. He also caught 70 passes and scored eight touchdowns. Talon Smith added all-conference honorable mention honors in 2015 after 37 catches and 598 yards. Pecikonis became the all-time ASU leader in receiving yards and reception in 2014 and ended his career with 2,831 yards and 189 receptions. Akins became the fifth receiver in school history to surpass 2,000 yards in a single season. After finishing his career at ASU, Akins signed to play professionally with the NFL’s St. Louis Rams.
Dallas also mentored receivers Chris Omigie, Anthony Yancy, Talon Smith and Pecikonis to the LSC all-conference honors in 2014, Joey Knight in 2013, Akins and Pecikonis in 2012, and Nate Bayless at tight end in 2011.
Dallas came to Angelo State after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas. He graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in secondary education. He played quarterback for two seasons for Kansas Wesleyan after starting his collegiate career at Fort Hays State. At Kansas Wesleyan, he played and then coached under his father, Dave Dallas, who spent 16 years as the head coach at KWU after eight years at Ottawa University. Drew Dallas ranks second in career passing completions and third in passing yards on the Coyotes’ all-time list.
He is a graduate of Salina Central High and played on the Mustangs back-to-back state championship teams in 2001 and 2002. Dallas is married to Heather Dallas and the couple has two daughters Hayden and Parker and a son Cooper. He graduated in August of 2013 with a Masters of Education in Education Administration from Angelo State University.
