The Angelo State men's cross country team placed fifth while the women's squad finished in sixth place at the 2008 Lone Star Conference Championships in Kingsville Saturday morning.
The ASU men finished the meet with 142 points. Junior Shannon Cunningham paced the Rams with a 14th place finish in the eight-kilometer run with a time of 25:06. Brian Carroll placed 18th (25:23), Nate Gonzales 23rd (25:41), Robert Hummingbird 46th (27:11), Hector Flores 49th (27:35), Andy Ruvalcaba 55th (28:15) and Randal Guinn 57th (28:26).
Abilene Christian won the men's title for the 18th consecutive year, 24th overall, with a near-perfect score of 17 points. ACU's Daniel Maina picked up the individual title in a time of 23:32. Tarleton State finished second with 77 points just ahead of third-place Texas A&M-Commerce (78). Eastern Central was fourth (88), ahead of ASU, Cameron sixth (147), Eastern New Mexico seventh (174), West Texas A&M eighth (193) and host Texas A&M-Kingsville ninth (270).
Junior Paige Massingill led the Rambelles with a ninth-place finish with a time of 23:25 in the six-kilometer run, earning the native of Comanche All-LSC honors. Brittney Heath placed 19th (24:16), Patricia Dailey 25th (24:59), Alyssa Priest 27th (25:09), Andria Nussey 49th (26:56) and Jennifer Flanery 63rd (28:53). The Rambelles finished the meet with 129 points.
Midwestern State captured the women's title with 58 points, placing three runners in the top 10. West Texas A&M was second with 74 points, East Central third with 84 points, Central Oklahoma fourth with 115 points and Abilene Christian fifth with 122 points. After ASU, Southwestern Oklahoma was seventh (133), Tarleton State eighth (143), Eastern New Mexico ninth (243), Texas A&M-Commerce 10th (280), Texas A&M-Kingsville 11th (300) and Southeastern Oklahoma 12th (322).
ACU's Winrose Karunda claimed the individual title in a time of 21:39.
Next up for the ASU squads are the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championships, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 8, in San Antonio.
