Midwestern State scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning as the Mustangs suprised second-seeded St. Mary's, 2-0, Wednesday afternoon in the second game of the 2008 NCAA DII South Central Regional Tournament at the ASU Softball Complex in San Angelo.
MSU's Katie Peterson (26-8) retired nine Rattlers via the strike out while giving up just two hits in a complete game performance. The Mustangs (36-27) took their lead with two outs in the top of the eighth as Maranda Bishop scored from second base on a St. Mary's error. MSU added a second run in the frame on a single by Lauren Craig scoring Kristen Stonecipher from second base. The No. 7 seeded Mustangs will now play third-seeded Southeastern Oklahoma at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
Malissa Magee (36-7) was handed the loss for St. Mary's, giving up two unearned runs on five hits in a complete game. Magee fanned nine while walking three. St. Mary's (53-11) will play No. 6 seed Central Oklahoma at 11 a.m. Thursday morning in the losers' bracket.
