Wildcats Survive Losers' Bracket, Again

Abilene Christian avoided eliminated for the second straight day as the Wildcats ousted Midwestern State, 6-2, Friday morning in game nine of the 2008 NCAA DII South Central Regional Tournament at the ASU Softball Complex in San Angelo.

Jessica Shiery gave the Wildcats an early lead with her 12th home run of the season in the top of the first frame, putting ACU up 2-0. Abilene Christian added two more runs in the third on a triple by Kim Partin, doubling the Wildcats' lead to 4-0 and sealing the victory.

Jacque Gregoire (7-5) picked up the victory giving up two earned runs on six hits in a complete-game performance. Shierry ended the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored with a double and a home run. ACU (34-26) will next play at 6:30 p.m. tonight againt the Central Oklahoma/St. Edward's winner.

For Midwestern State, Ashley Kuchenki (6-11) was handed the loss giving up four earned runs on six hits in three innings. Maranda Bishop led the Mustangs offensively going 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Kristen Stonecipher's RBI in the sixth inning set a new Lone Star Conference career record at 172. MSU fell to 36-29 to end the season.
