Must Win for 'Belles

After dropping two of the last three games, the Angelo State women's basketball team (9-7, 0-1 LSC South) will look to bounce back Saturday night as the 'Belles host Tarleton State in their Lone Star Conference South Division home opener. Game time is 6 p.m. at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena.

'Belles Handed OT Loss...ASU opened up LSC South play Wednesday night a 79-77 overtime defeat at Midwestern State. The 'Belles led by as many as 12 points midway through the second half but couldn't hold off the Mustangs as MSU's Andrea Buben drained her seventh three-pointer of the game at the end of regulation to send ASU to overtime for the first time this season. The Mustangs outscored ASU, 11-9, in the extra frame to complete the upset. Sophomore guard Camille Perkins continued to shine for the 'Belles with 23 points while senior forward Lauren Weishuhn nearly recorded a “triple-double” with eight points, eight rebounds and a career-best eight steals.

ASU Goes 6-2 in Crossover...The 'Belles finished crossover play with the best record among the seven LSC South Division squads. At 6-2, ASU was matched only by nationally ranked West Texas A&M against teams from the North Division, while Abilene Christian and Texas A&M-Kingsville both went 5-3. The 6-2 mark may come in handy for ASU entering the postseason as crossover record one of the LSC's tie breakers. Over the past three seasons, the 'Belles have posted a 16-5 crossover record.

Perkins Continues Streak...With 23 points at Midwestern State Wednesday night, ASU sophomore guard Camille Perkins has scored in double figures in six straight contests. The Groesbeck native is now averaging 13.6 points per game, ranking her 14th in the LSC, while shooting 42 percent from the field, 39 percent from three-point range and 77 percent from the free-throw line, 10th highest in the LSC. Perkins has reached double figures in nine of the last 10 games and a total of 10 times this season for the 'Belles. As a freshman, she scored in double figures in 28 of 30 games, including the last 19 contests of the season, giving her 38 such performance in her short career with ASU.

Parks a Double Threat...Senior center Ann Parks is averaging 9.9 points per game and leads the 'Belles with 6.8 rebounds per contest. She has one “double-double” this season, scoring 18 points and grabbing 14 rebounds against St. Mary's in the season opener, and has led the 'Belles in scoring six times and led the squad in rebounding in 10 of the 16 games. Parks is shooting 57 percent from the field, ranking her fourth in the LSC, and adds 1.3 steals and one assist per game.

Leatherman Warming Up...After a slow start to the season due to injury, junior forward Lindsey Leatherman is now the 'Belles' third-leading scorer at 9.1 points per game. Since moving back into the starting line up on Jan. 3, Leatherman has scored in double figures in three of five games, including a season-best 19 points against Texas A&M-Commerce. In her five starts, Leatherman has average more than 12 points per game and is shooting 43 percent from the field. Leatherman has reached double figures in the past two games, scoring 10 points at Central Oklahoma and adding 15 points against Midwestern State Wednesday night.

Weishuhn Stealing the Show...Senior forward Lauren Weishuhn entered her final season with the 'Belles ranked ninth on program's all-time steals list. Over the past 16 games, the Wall native has moved into sixth place on the list with 166 steals. Weishuhn needs one steal to move into a three-way tie for fourth place all-time, matching Lisa Klein (1986-90) and Katrina Polnick (1995-99) at 167 career takeaways. Next on the ASU all-time steals list is Asheia Haynes, who had 168 steals from 2004-07, in third place. The ASU career record for steals is 259, set by Kelly Clark from 1982-86.

'Belles Beyond 500...On Jan. 5, the Angelo State women's basketball program collected its 500th all-time win in an 82-68 victory over Texas A&M-Commerce, becoming the fourth team in the LSC to reach the plateau. Previous teams to collect 500 wins in the league are Abilene Christian, Tarleton State and West Texas A&M. The ASU women's program is now 501-452 all-time in its 34th season.

The Brooks File...The longest tenured women's basketball coach in school history, Sally Walling Brooks (Midwestern State, 1988) is in her ninth year at the helm of the 'Belles. She boasts a record of 188-71 in her eight-plus seasons with ASU and has led the 'Belles to seven straight NCAA Division II Regional Tournaments. She is a two-time LSC Coach of the Year, earning the honor in 2001 and 2005, and has led ASU to three conference championships (2002, 2004, 2005). Prior to her arrival at ASU, she served as the head coach at Incarnate Word, collecting a record of 155-106 in nine seasons with the Cardinals.
