Emporia State designated player Jill Peters blasted her eighth home run of the season with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the No. 4-seed Hornets to a 3-2 win over fifth-seeded Nebraska-Omaha Friday in the first game of the 2009 NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament hosted by Angelo State in San Angelo.
Peters went 3-for-5 in the contest with two runs scored and RBI, adding a double in the fourth. ESU centerfielder Jenna Porter added a 3-for-4 performance with a runs scored and an RBI while shortstop Abby Hughes went 2-for-4 for the Hornets. In the circle, Megan Dennis (23-7) earned the victory givng up one unearned run on seven hits with six strikeouts.
For UNO, third baseman Jenna Dell and catcher Kristi Meneely each went 2-for-4 from the plate. Lindsey Slocum (14-3) was handed the loss after tossing two outs in the ninth and collecting one out in the tenth.
Emporia State improved to 43-14 and will now advance to the winner's bracket at 2 p.m. Saturday against the winner of Friday night's Angelo State/St. Edward's contest. UNO (43-16) will face the loser of tonight's game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
