Rambelles down UIW, 11-3

The Angelo State softball team (5-0) closed out the season-opening St. Mary's Invitational with a perfect record as the Rambelles sailed to an 11-3, five-inning win over Incarnate Word Sunday afternoon. The Rambelles were one of three teams to go 5-0 at the 16-team, three-day event.

Trailing 1-0, it took until the third inning for the Rambelles to score as they got RBI singles from senior Sarah DeMoss and junior Alix Dean in the frame to give ASU a 2-0 lead. UIW would counter with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, however, to take back the lead, 3-2.

The Rambelles would then use five hits and take advantage of two UIW errors in the bottom of the fourth to post four runs and take control of the game. Senior Nicole Smith would open ASU's half of the fourth as she reached on an error and would later score on another Cardinal error to give re-tie the game, 3-3. Junior Megan Pumphrey would then hit the first home run by a Rambelle this season, a two-run shot scoring freshman Chelsey Walters, and Dean would add another RBI single in the frame.

ASU would plate five more runs in bottom of the fifth to secure the run-rule victory. Smith would start the scoring as she found home on a wild pitch and Walters quickly followed as she scored on a UIW error on the same play. Junior Kaycee Taylor would close out a solid weekend with an RBI double and freshman pinch-hitter Amanda Wilhelm would end the game with an RBI single to right-centerfield, scoring sophomore Nicole Wellmann.

Junior right-hander Tressie Keilman (1-0) picked up her first win as a Rambelle as she tossed all five innings. Keilman would give up three earned runs and fan five Cardinal hitters. Taylor would go 4-for-4 with two RBI while Dean, DeMoss and Walters each had multi-hit games.

The Rambelles will host the ASU Blue & Gold Classic this weekend at the ASU Softball Complex. ASU will open the event against Washburn at 12:45 p.m. Friday.
