San Angelo – Reserve redshirt freshman quarterback
Kyle Washington threw for 195 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Angelo State Rams (5-5, 4-3) to a 38-21 win over the Incarnate Word Cardinals (2-8, 1-6) in a Lone Star Conference game at San Angelo Stadium.
Washington replaced senior
Michael Cochran at quarterback in the first quarter and was very efficient, completing 12 of 16 passes without throwing an interception, despite losing starting receivers
C.J. Akins and Dakari Pecikonis to game-ending injuries late in the first quarter.
Joey Knight caught two passes for 58 yards and a touchdown,
Antwon Williams had two receptions for 55 yards and a score while
Donavan Roberts gained 59 yards rushing on 12 carries and a touchdown to lead the Rams.
Incarnate Word quarterback Taylor Woods completed 13 of 25 passes for 86 yards, two scores and one interception while Trent Rios ran for 83 yards and caught five passes for 33 yards.
The Ram defense held the Cardinals to just 260 total yards including 64 total yards from the end of the first quarter to Incarnate Word's next to last play from scrimmage in the fourth quarter.
Defensive end
Austin Benson led the ASU defense with 8 total tackles, 4 for loss including 3 ½ quarterback sacks.
The Ram offense finished with 348 yards of total offense, 153 on the ground and 195 through the air.
Angelo State held a tenuous 21-14 lead in the fourth quarter, but Washington put the game away for the Rams by throwing a 48-yard scoring pass to
Antwon Williams and a 45-yard touchdown strike to
Joey Knight.
Leading 14-7 and the half, Angelo State took advantage of a Cardinal mistake on the opening kickoff and scored a touchdown to grab a 14-point lead.
Cardinal kick returner Joseph Sadler received the kick, attempted to lateral the ball across the field, but Ram special teams' player Jared Ross scooped up the loss ball and ran it back 13 yards for a touchdown.
Incarnate Word crawled back into the game when Woods completed a 15-yard scoring pass to Dominic Hamilton to cut the ASU lead to 21-14 with 13:48 left in the game.
The Angelo State defense was whistled for 40 yards on penalties on the drive.
But on the next drive, Washington answered with two key third down passes. The first was a 9-yard completion to
Excelle Osborne on third and four from the Ram 36-yard line and three plays later he hit Williams for the 48-yard score on third and three from the IWU 48-yard line to increase the lead to 28-14 with 11:10 left in the game.
On the next offensive possession, the Rams took just 1:23 to travel 78 yards in four plays to put the game out of reach.
Washington hit Knight on a 13-yard pass on the first play, Roberts ran 15 yard on the second play, Washington added a 5-yard run on the third play and then capped it with the 45-yard touchdown pass to Knight to increase the lead to 35-14 with 7:48 left in the contest.
ASU kicker
Jarred Martin made a 22-yard field goal and Incarnate Word's Marcus Wright added a 70-yard scoring run in the final minute of the game.
Washington made an immediate impact in relief of Cochran, leading the Rams on a 7-play, 83-yard touchdown drive to give ASU a 7-0 lead just under six minutes into the first quarter.
Washington ran the ball twice for 20 yards and completed both of his passes for 40 yards including a 15-yard scoring strike to Akins for the score. The Rams were also aided by a 15-yard late hit penalty after Washington completed a 25-yard pass to
Talon Smith.
Cochran was sacked and intercepted on the Rams first series of the game, Washington replace him on the second series.
Incarnate Word responded to the Ram scoring drive with one of their own.
The Cardinals drove 75 yards in 15 plays, taking nearly 8 and a half minutes off the clock as Woods hit Trent Rios on a 4-yard scoring pass to tie the game with just 50 seconds left in the first quarter.
Incarnate Word dominated time of possession in the first quarter, controlling the ball for 10 minutes to just 5 for Angelo State.
The second quarter was dominated by the Ram defense and one Angelo State scoring drive.
Angelo State held Incarnate Word to just 15 total yards and one first down in the second quarter including a key fourth down stop to begin the period.
After a 20-yard punt gave the Cardinals first and 10 at the Angelo State 30-yard line, the Rams defense stopped Incarnate Word on fourth and one from the ASU 21-yard line when tailback Devin Haywood fumbled the pitch from Woods which resulted in an 8-yard loss.
ASU regained the lead later in the quarter when Washington engineered a 9-play, 65-yard drive that resulted in a 3-yard touchdown run out of the wildcat formation by Roberts to give ASU a 14-7 lead with 4 minutes left in the half.
Roberts and Washington led the Ram offense on the drive, Roberts rushing 6 times for 33 yards including a 21-yard gain to the Cardinal 28-yard line and Washington completing a key 7-yard pass to Williams on third and one from the Ram 44. Washington setup Roberts' touchdown run with a 9-yard run on first and 10 from the Cardinal 14 yard line.
The drive was also aided by another key Cardinal penalty. Incarnate Word was called a person foul penalty that gave the Rams first down at the 14-yard line after the Rams had failed on a third and 10 pass play at the IWU 28-yard line.
Both defenses were in top form in the first half as neither team had over 100 yards of total offense. Incarnate Word had 96 yards while Angelo State could muster only 88.
Washington was perfect through the air in the first half, completing all five pass attempts for 53 yards.
Woods was nearly as effective for the Cardinals, completing 7 of 12 passes for 51 yards.
