Game 1 Final Box
DENTON, Texas –
Lauren Smith launched her first career grand slam and
Morgan Spearman also left the yard to give the No. 8 Angelo State softball team a 6-3 victory over Emporia State in Game 1 of the 2012 Best Western Spring Fling. The Rambelles have tallied 16 home runs in their first 11 games.
The Hornets (6-4) stung first, as they plated an unearned run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Angelo State (9-2) tied it up in the third when Spearman belted a solo shot – her third homer in as many games. An inning later the Belles added another run behind some timely two-out hitting.
Elsamartina Apo started the rally with her double to right field. The speedy
Luz'Ce Baca would pinch run for Apo and score on an
April Breshears' single back up the middle.
With a 2-1 advantage entering the sixth, the Rambelles broke the game open with their third grand slam of the season.
DeeshanaLynn Tafiti took a two-out walk before making her way to third on Apo's second double of the game. After the Hornets intentionally walked Breshears, the stage was set for Smith. The Waxahachie native would have the ball exit stage left after knocking her second home run of the season.
The Rambelles went on to earn a 6-3 victory, as starting pitcher
Mary Kate McKay improved to 5-0 on the season. The sophomore tossed 6.0 innings allowing just four hits and striking out six.
Up next for the Belles is a 4:30 p.m. contest against Washburn in Denton at North Lakes Park.
