SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State men's basketball team were seconds away from its first win in Wichita Falls since 1988 but No. 11 Midwestern hit two free throws with 17 seconds left to take a 62-61 victory on Saturday night.
The Rams (9-13, 2-10) put the pressure on No. 11 Midwestern (18-2, 11-2) all game and were up 61-60 with 1:15 to go but wouldn't find the basket again. The Mustangs' Anthony Harris hit the two free throws to seal the victory. Kennen Coleman launched a three pointer with eight seconds left but it was off the mark.
Angelo State had a strong first half were up 31-23 at the half on 40 percent from the field and four three pointers.
Javae King-Gilchrist scored nine points in the first half with four of those coming from the charity stripe.
The Mustangs went 0-8 from behind the arch and only shot 36 percent from the field at the half. Angelo State forced Midwestern into 10 first half turnovers.
Coleman and
LaDonn Huckaby kept the Rams close in the second half as both scored a team high 13 points. Ball movement was a key throughout the game as Angelo State had 16 assists. Midwestern was aided by Michael Loyd's 13 second half points. Three other Mustangs were in double-digit points on the night.
The Mustangs shot a total of 40 free throws hitting on 18 compared to the Rams 83 percent (10 of 12).
Angelo State takes to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7:30 in Stephens Arena at the Junell Center to face Eastern New Mexico.
