Rams Fall 37-3 to No. 1 Valdosta State on the Road

VALDOSTA, Ga.–
Angelo State had some early miscues and couldn't recover as No. 1 Valdosta State defeated the Rams 37-3 at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium on Saturday night in front of 3,806.

The Rams (1-2) opened the game taking three of its first drives into Valdosta State (3-0) territory before miscues. An interception, fumble, punt and missed field goal turned into a 17-0 lead for the Blazers midway through the second quarter.

Jemie Calhoun took the first play of the game three yards up the middle and a 15-yard facemask penalty provided the Rams an 18-yard gain. Joey Knight caught a pass from Kyle Washington for 14 yards to put the Rams at the Blazers 43-yard line. 

Dominique Wheeler stepped in front of a third down pass and intercepted Washington at the VSU 39 yard line to stop the first drive.

The Blazers marched down the field to the Ram eight yard line but the defense responded. After a false start penalty, the Rams stopped Cedric O'Neal for a one-yard gain and forced an incompletion. VSU's Anthony Pistelli came out for a 25-yard field goal and missed it wide right.

Quinn Reels took the first play after the missed field goal down the sideline on a shovel pass 20-yards. Calhoun broke open up the middle and cut to the outside for a 38-yard gain after Talon Smith gained five yards on an end around. The next play Washington came around the right end and fumbled and VSU's Wheeler picked it up and raced 86 yards for a touchdown.

A quick three and out by ASU and Valdosta State used five plays to take a 14-0 lead on a Seantavious Jones six yard reception from Cayden Cochran. 

Cochran threw for 255 yards on 25-of-38 yards passing and two touchdowns in the game.

The Rams tried to respond driving to Valdosta State's 13-yard line before Rhett Peterson missed on a 30-yard field goal.

Angelo State's defense would hold Valdosta State to two Anthony Pistelli field goals to end the first half down 20-0. 

The Rams came out to open the third quarter and forced a three and out of Valdosta State's offense. The ASU offense grinded out a 14 play drive that ended with Peterson connecting on a 38-yard field goal to make it 20-3.

Valdosta State's defense tightened after the first drive of the second half only allowing 51 total yards the rest of the way.

Cochran would find Willie Downs for a on a 37-yard connection to push the Blazers advantage to 37-3 at the 6:47 mark of the third quarter. Pistelli added his third field goal of the game in the fourth quarter before Austin Scott scored on a 10-yard rush for the final score of 37-3

ASU rushed for 204 yards of offense but only gained 294 yards of total offense. Valdosta State gained 495 yards of total offense.

Rush Seaver recorded 10 tackles while Ryan Clapsaddle grabbed his second interception of the season.

Calhoun led the Rams 97 yards on the ground. Washington went 14-of-23 for 90 yards and added 42 yards on the ground.

The Rams will face McMurry in Abilene next Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Wilfred Moore Stadium.
