Historic season ends for Rambelles in 1-0 loss to Lions

COMMERCE – The most successful season in Angelo State's soccer history came to an end with a 1-0 loss to Texas A&M-Commerce on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Division II tournament at the Lion Soccer Field.

The Rambelles (16-5-1) were limited to two shots on goal in the game and to nine shots overall. Madison Cordts scored the only goal of the game with a 44th minute goal off a double assist from Anitra Wright off a play which originated on a corner kick by Vicky Black.

"It's impossible to describe how proud I am to be a part of this team," ASU senior Caitlyn Conaway said. "This program has turned into something great and I know that they are going to keep improving and will do great things next season."

The Lions (16-5) advance to the third round of the tournament, while the ASU season ends after it advanced further in the postseason than ever before along with establishing program records with 16 wins and 13 shutouts.

"They play with a deep sweeper that we struggled to get behind," ASU head coach Travis McCorkle said. "We knew that was going to be an issue. We switched to three forwards in the second half, but the conditions favored them. They play a direct style without a ton of possession. For us, we have to knock the ball around. That is part of what we do. Being down a goal affected us, but I'm proud of our girls and thought we played well in the midfield. Defensively we made one mistake that cost us a goal and unfortunately that cost us the game. It's been a great season and I have nothing but pride for them."

Shantel Wittke finished the game with seven saves in goal for the Rambelles, including making three saves in the first half and then four in the second. The Lions finished the game with an 8-2 shots on goal advantage and an 18-7 total shot advantage. Elizabeth Rodriguez and Sierra Anderson each had two shots in the game, while Haley Mendel, Kathleen Keoughan and Selena Alvarez each had one shot. Rodriguez and Anderson accounted for the two ASU shots on goal.

Cordts' goal was her third of the season, while A&M-Commerce goalkeeper Courtnie Northern recorded one save. Wright led the Lions with four shots and Cordts and Callie Annett finished the game with three shots.
