DALLAS – Haley Mendel recorded the first hat trick of her career to help lead the Angelo State soccer team to a 4-1 non-conference win over Colorado Mesa on Saturday in a victory which establishes the best start to a season in ASU's 20-year program history. The Rambelles (4-0) surpassed Angelo State's 1998 team's 3-1 record through four games and have now outscored their opponents 16-3 through the first four games of the 2014 season. ASU has scored four goals in each of its first four contests this season and Mendel has scored six goals to start her sophomore season after not scoring a goal as a freshman.
"I think the start we're having to the season is a testament to the work the girls put into the offseason, summer and in our preseason camp," ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle said. "We came into the season feeling pretty good about our team because of the dedication they showed leading into the regular season. It's always nice to be a part of a positive record, but we have a lot of games remaining and that's where our main focus has to be for us to have the type of season that this group is capable of."
Colorado Mesa's Kendra Penchoff scored the first goal of the game just four minutes into action before ASU went off for four unanswered goals in the dominant win over its in-region opponent. Mendel score her first goal of the game on a free kick in the 18th minute of action before striking again in the 29th minute off an assist from
Jenny Kotowych. With 17 seconds remaining in the first half,
Tiffany Dang scored her first goal of the season and her career off an assist from
Cynthia Andrews to give ASU a 3-1 halftime advantage. The Rambelles have now outscored their opponents 10-1 in the first half and Dang became the 11th player on ASU's roster to score a goal this season.
"Tiffany's goal was really important for us because it gave us the two-goal lead going into halftime and gave us momentum going forward," McCorkle said. "All goals are important, but I thought that one really put the game away for us."
Mendel would complete her three-goal performance with a penalty kick goal in the 85th minute to secure the fourth straight game the Rambelles have scored four goals in program history. Kotowych's assist was her team-leading third of the season. Mendel has scored her six goals this season on only 10 shots for an astonishing .600 shot-on-goal percentage.
"I'm just out there trying to relax and get forward to be in position to put the ball in the goal," Mendel said. "My two objectives are to score or pass the ball to one of my teammates who is in a better position to score. That's what we are trying to do every time we have the ball and it's working right now."
Shantel Wittke and
Natalie Nielsen teamed up for three saves in goal for the Rambelles, with Wittke providing two saves in 74 minutes of action and Nielsen stopping one shot in her first time in goal this season. ASU outshot the Mavericks 16-12 in the game, including owing a 12-6 shot advantage in the first half.
Sierra Anderson added three shots for the Rambelles, while
Callie Smith,
Kathleen Keoughan and Dang each provided two shots for the ASU offense.
Colorado Mesa fell to 0-3-1 with the neutral field loss to the Rambelles.
"I thought we did a good job of pressing and not letting them possess the ball," McCorkle said. "We did a good job of keeping the ball away from them after the first 15 minutes. It was a good performance for us."
Angelo State begins a six-game home stand next weekend by hosting Oklahoma Christian and St. Mary's at the ASU Soccer Field. The Rambelles will open the weekend at 5 p.m. against OC on Friday before playing St. Mary's at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21. ASU is 2-0 at home this season with victories over Adams State and New Mexico Highlands and has outscored its opponents 8-2 on its home field.
"We are all excited, but we are also trying to keep our calm and go on to the next game," Mendel said. "We go game by game and not worry about the past."
