BLACKWATER DRAW, New Mexico – The No. 24 Angelo State football team lost 46-28 to Eastern New Mexico on Saturday afternoon at Blackwater Draw, New Mexico.
The Rams (5-3, 2-3 LSC) were outgained 601-505 by the Greyhounds (6-2, 3-2 LSC) including 585-118 on the ground. Â ASU did throw for 387 yards but committed two turnovers that led to two ENMU touchdowns.
Kyle Washington threw for 352 yards on 27-of-46 passing and Brett Rasberry threw his first career touchdown on a 35 yard double pass. Talon Smith returned from injury to catch seven passes for 84 yards. Anthony Pierson led the team in yards with 99 receiving yards on three catches. Donovan Thompson and Jeremiah Baines each made four catches for 44 and 40 yards, respectively. Ryan Byrd led the rushing attack with 52 yards on eight carries. Three Rams collected double-digit tackles with Ryan Clapsaddle leading the way with 13 stops. Fred Lawrence and Willie Brown each recorded 10 tackles each. Kevin Wharry was able to intercept ENMU's Jeremy Buurma for the junior's second of the season.
The Greyhounds opened the game with a nine play 81 yard drive that was capped off on a 10 yard run by Kamal Cass to take a 7-0 advantage.
The Rams were able to respond quickly. Washington found Thompson for a 25 yard gain and two plays later Washington threw to Rasberry behind the line and he found Pierson for a 35-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7.
ENMU answered with another long drive. The Greyhounds covered 84 yards on 17 plays that ended with Cass' second touchdown of the game.
ASU came back out and was on its own 41 yard line when Byrd carried the ball for nine yards. The senior fumbled and ENMU was able to recover. The Greyhounds converted the turnover into a touchdown. Tayshaun Gary scored on a rush of 15 yards.
Turnovers plagued ASU again on the next drive. Washington was intercepted by De'Aundre Sanders on the first play of the drive and returned 35 yards to the ASU one-yard line. Two plays later, ENMU added to their lead with a two yard rush and made it 28-7.
After the defenses forced punts by both teams, ASU found its rhythm on offense. Washingotn hit Smith for 20 yards and followed it up with a pass to Pierson for 42 yards to take it down to the ENMU 10 yard line. Byrd carried it 10 yards for the touchdown and after the two-point conversion caught by Smith cut the lead to 28-15.
ASU had a chance to score again before halftime but a fourth down pass was incomplete to take the game into half at 28-15.
The Rams came out of the break and drove down to the ENMU 15 yard line. A 12 yard rush by Trey Green took the ball to the three but a fourth down pass fell incomplete.
ENMU answered on the fourth play of the next drive. Tayshaun Gary found an opening and ran 72 yards for an ENMU touchdown and extended the Greyhounds lead to 38-15.
The Rams again cut the deficit to 38-22 with a 10 play 75 yard drive. Washington found Green on a 24 yard pass to take it to the ENMU 12 yards like and Green took it in four plays later on a three yard rush for a touchdown.
ENMU missed a 42-yard field goal and the two teams traded punts before Wharry was able to intercept Buurma in the end zone to prevent a touchdown. A quick three and out by ASU and ENMU capitalized on a 71 yard touchdown run by Cass.
ASU once again tried to mount a comeback as Washington went six-for-eight on the drive. The Rams drove 77 yards and Washington leaped over his offensive line for a one-yard touchdown to make the score 46-28.
ENMU was able to hang on to the ball and run the clock out to make the final 46-28.
The Rams return home for the final scheduled home game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 31. ASU will honor the Ram football senior's and it will also be Military Appreciation Day. Â
