Rams End Season with 63-20 Blowout of Eastern New Mexico

BLACKWATER DRAW, New Mexico – The Angelo State football team ended its season with a school record nine touchdowns in a 63-20 blowout of Eastern New Mexico in the third place game of the Lone Star Conference Playoffs held in Blackwater Draw, New Mexico on Saturday afternoon.

The Rams ended the season at 7-4 while Eastern New Mexico dropped to 6-5. It is just the third time since 1999 that ASU has won at least seven games in a season and the first back-to-back winning seasons since 1998-1999. ASU racked up 630 yards of total offense while limiting the Greyhounds to 394 yards and forcing three turnovers. It is the fourth game that ASU has racked up over 600 yards of total offense. The 63 points is the second most points scored in school history since 1964.  ENMU was held to just 76 yards of offense in the first half.

Kyle Washington threw for 406 yards on 22-of-39 throwing. He tossed four touchdowns, rushed for two and caught his first career receiving touchdown on a three yard pass from Jacob Burtch. The senior quarterback added 51 yards on the ground as well. Eddie Smith III led the team in rushing with 73 yards and scored his first career touchdown. Talon Smith led the receivers in catches with six for 98 yards and two touchdowns. Anthony Pierson led all receivers with 148 yards and one touchdown. Donovan Thompson set the ASU single season record for receiving yards with 75 yards on the day. He finished the season with 1,136 yards. Zane Hernandez was able to end his career with a touchdown reception. The tight end caught two passes for 14 yards.

Justin Jackson led all tacklers with 14 including 11 solo. Markus Jones, Willie Brown and Ryan Clapsaddle each recorded nine tackles that held the No. 4 scoring offense to just 20 points.

The Rams started fast after the defense forced a three and out. Washington hit Thompson for 52 yards down to the ENMU five yard line as he surpassed Chris Brazzell for the most receiving yards in a single season. Byrd took the ball around the left end for the first score of the game.

The ASU defense forced a fourth and one at the ENMU 34 yard line. Brown shot through the line and was able to sack Jeremy Burrma to force a turnover on downs.

The offense answered with a nine play 32 yard drive. Pierson caught his first pass of the day for a gain of 25 yards and Washington then found Brett Rasberry for seven yards. The senior quarterback carried the ball the rest of the way for a five yard touchdown to make it 14-0.

ENMU was forced to punt after another three and out but the punt was muffed and ENMU took over at the ASU 26. ENMU scored three plays later to cut the lead to 14-7.

The two teams traded punts before ASU got rolling again. Rasberry caught a 40 yard pass and was tripped up at the ENMU 15 yard line. After a rush by Trey Green for seven yards, Washington again found pay dirt this time from eight yards out.

The Rams defense forced its third punt of the game to give ASU possession at its own 11 yards line. A delay of game moved it back to the six but Smith III made up the yardage. His first carry of the game was for seven yards and he followed it up with a big 48 yard run. An ENMU unsportsmanlike conduct penalty added 15 yards to the play and ASU was deep inside ENMU territory. Washington found Smith on a flag route for ASU's fourth touchdown of the game and extended the lead to 28-7.

Back-to-back punts looked to give ENMU the ball. Sam Fowler punted the ball but an ENMU blocker ran into his own player and forced a fumble with ASU recovering at the ENMU 25. Washington and Byrd carried the ball down to the six yard line and an offside penalty took it to the three. Burtch trotted out to take the snap with Washington out wide. Washington used his height to pull in the pass from Burtch for his first receiving touchdown of his career.

The ASU continued its trend of forcing three and outs but ENMU again went for it on fourth down. ENMU needed two yards but Jackson made a tackle on a sweep to limit the gain to just one yard and give the ball back to ASU.

ASU took advantage of the turnover. Pierson caught a ball for 36 yards to move the ball inside the five yard line. Washington found Smith in the back of the end zone for his second touchdown of the day and a 42-7 lead but the Rams weren't finished scoring.

Fred Lawrence picked off Buurma at the ASU 33. Washington hit Talon Smith again for 56 yards and Eddie Smith III scored his first career touchdown on an 11 yard scamper. The Rams went into halftime up 49-7 and totaling 408 yards of total offense.

The Rams didn't slow down coming out of the break. The first drive of the second half ended in another touchdown. Washington went 5-for-7 on the drive and capped it off connecting with fellow senior Zane Hernandez for the three yard score.

ASU added the school record ninth touchdown toward the end of the third quarter. Washington hit Talon Smith for a 20 yard gain and then found Pierson down the seam. Pierson outran the defense for a 60 yard receiving touchdown and a 63-7 advantage.

ENMU would add two late touchdowns to make the final 63-20.

The game also concludes the careers for ASU seniors Brett Rasberry, Kyle Washington, Talon Smith, Ryan Byrd, Dominique McCoy, Ryan Clapsaddle, Jamie Thomas, Sam Fowler, Zane Hernandez, Matthew Gholston, John Siliga, Jeremy Johnson, Clayton Callicutt and Raymond Coen.

The Rams set some season records in the win. ASU set the record for most points scored in a season (450), most passing yards in a season (3,687), most yards in single season (5,990) and yards per game (544.5). It marks the first time an ASU offense has averaged over 500 yards of offense in a single game.
