SAN ANGELO – The No. 11 Angelo State softball team moved to 6-0 for the first time since 2011 with a 9-4 win over Colorado School of Mines and a 5-0 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State on the final day of the George McCorkle Challenge at Mayer Field.
The Rambelles used a potent pitching duo of
Kenedy Urbany and
Brandy Marlett while the offense hit .382 as a team and scored 14 runs.
The first game ASU jumped out to a big lead in the first inning.
Rachel Moore brought home the first two runs of the game with a two RBI double to left center. Camry
Weinheimer recorded her first RBI of her career bringing home
Tina Cisneros on a single.
Megan Granado scored on a bad throw by the CSM (1-4) left fielder to make it 5-0 after one inning.
Urbany pitched well through the first three innings of the game. The sophomore only allowed one hit and four base runners in the first four innings.
The Rambelles added a run in the second and third innings to extend their lead.
Madison Greenwell, who reached on an error, stole second and scored on a single by
Micherie Koria.
Katlyn Herzog earned her first hit of the season and scored on an RBI single from
Lanie Robinson to put ASU up 7-0.
The Orediggers made some noise in the fourth with three hits and three walks to score four runs. Urabny came out of the game after 4.0 innings pitched and giving up four runs and four walks.
Marlett came in to start the fifth and put CSM down in order but the Orediggers threatened in the sixth. Colorado School of Mines drew two walks and a single to load the bases with two outs. Marlett got out of the inning with her second strikeout of the game.
Moore hit her second home run of the season to left center to make it 8-4 in the sixth and Weinheimer would bring home Herzog to make the final score 9-4.
Marlett earned the save after striking out the final batter. The Henderson, Nev., native threw 3.0 innings and gave up two hits with four strikeouts for the first save of her collegiate career.
The freshman pitcher came up big again for the Rambelles against Northwestern Oklahoma State. She held the Rangers to just two hits and earned her second shutout of the season. In four games of work, Marlett has only allowed seven hits while striking out 23 batters.
The Rambelles would score the only run they needed in the bottom of the first. Greenwell, who ended the weekend with a team leading .579 batting average, singled and would score on a single to left field by Dunn for a 1-0 advantage.
The NWOSU duo of Shelby Anderson and Allora Miller slowed the ASU bats down until the fifth.
Ciara Sheppard hit a ground-rule double to center field and
Ambra Hill used her speed to reach on a single. Koria scored pinch runner
Kelly Johnson on a fielder's choice. Koria would get caught in a run down to score Hill and made it all the way to third on an error by the Rangers. Dunn made it 4-0 with a RBI double to right field.
The fifth and final run came on a triple by Greenwell to plate Granado from second base in the sixth.
The Rambelles return to competition on Friday, Feb. 13 in Canyon at the WT Woodward Invitational.Â
