SAN ANGELO – The No. 6 Angelo State softball team opened up Lone Star Conference action with a doubleheader sweep of Texas A&M-Kingsville on Sunday at Mayer Field.
The Rambelles moved to 13-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Lone Star Conference with a 5-3 win in game one and a six inning run-rule 8-0 victory in game two over Texas A&M-Kingsville (6-7, 0-2 LSC). ASU recorded a combined 21 hits over the two games and 13 runs. The pitching staff struck out 13 Javelina batters and only allowed two runs.
"I thought both teams played well despite the weather," ASU head softball coach
Travis Scott said. "Kenedy (Urbany) and Brandy (Marlett) were really good and it was great to see Tina (Cisneros), Ciara (Sheppard) and Lanie (Robinson) have great days offensively. It was nice to finish the day 2-0 in conference."
TAMUK took the lead at 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning with two unearned runs.
Kenedy Urbany was taking care of the TAMUK hitters through the first three innings striking out five batters but a fielding error and a wild pitch allowed the Javelinas to score. The Rambelles responded in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead. Pinch runner
Kelly Johnson scored on a TAMUK error to tie the game and
Camry Weinheimer crossed the plate on an RBI single from
Rachel Moore.
Tina Cisneros recorded her third hit of the game in the fifth with a double to right center.
Lanie Robinson, who recorded the games first RBI in the second inning, picked up another RBI with a single up the middle for a 4-2 advantage.
The Rambelles added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
Micherie Koria bunted for a single to lead off the inning. The senior stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The San Diego native used her speed on a grounder to the short stop to score from third.
Urbany picked up her seventh win of the season and ended the game with her eighth strikeout. The eight strikeouts tied her career high for strikeouts in a game.Â
Urbany got the Rambelles out to an early 1-0 lead in game two with a solo home run in the second inning. It is the Helotes native third home run of the season.
TAMUK had runners in scoring position in the second and third innings but
Brandy Marlett and the ASU defense kept the score at zero. The Javelinas loaded the bases with two outs and Marlett struck out TAMUK's Haley Boyett for the second-straight inning to get out of the second inning. The third inning provided a play at the plate. The Javelinas had a runner at third with one out and a fly ball was hit to center field. Koria made the catch and threw a bullet to home plate to throw the runner out for an inning ending double play.
Moore scored in the fourth on a single by Cisneros to make it 2-0 ASU. The Rambelles added two more runs in the fifth.
Ciara Sheppard hit a two-run home run to left center to extend the lead to 4-0. It is the freshman's first career home run.
ASU put the game away in the sixth. Granado and Cisneros each recorded hits and a RBI for a 6-0 advantage. Sheppard ended the game by run-rule with a single up the middle with the bases loaded to score the final two runs.
After the second and third innings, Marlett would only allow two hits in the final three innings. The freshman struck out six batters and only allowed four hits. Marlett improves to  6-1 on the season.
The Rambelles return to action on Tuesday in Odessa for a doubleheader with UTPB. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
