SAN ANGELO –The No. 6 Angelo State softball team dropped the Lone Star Conference series opening doubleheader 13-7 and 7-3 to Tarleton State on Friday night at Mayer Field.
The Rambelles (22-7-1, 7-6-1 LSC) allowed a combined 20 runs on 24 hits in the doubleheader to the TexAnns (18-12, 5-3 LSC). Angelo State left 12 total runners on base. It is just the second time that ASU has suffered back-to-back losses this season.
Game one starter, Brandy Marlett, pitched four innings and allowed six runs on eight hits. She struck out five and left with a 7-6 lead. The Rambelles grabbed a 1-0 lead on an RBI double from Tina Cisneros in the bottom of the first inning.
After Tarleton State took a 4-1 advantage with runs in the second and third innings, ASU responded with a big third inning. Megan Granado scored Kenedy Urbany with a RBI fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Rachel Moore's single through the right side brought home pinch runner Brook Mangold. Ciara Sheppard ripped a double to left field to give ASU its second lead of the game at 5-4. Micherie Koria hit a RBI single to extend the lead to 7-4 after three innings. Â
The TexAnns scored two runs in the fourth off Marlett to cut the deficit to 7-6. Kenedy Urbany came in to relieve Marlett over the final three innings but gave up seven runs on seven hits. TSU took the lead for good in the fifth. Â TSU tied the game on a single off Urbany's glove to tie the game and took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Shelby Hedrick. Â
TSU added five runs in the top of the seventh as Urbany was credited with her fourth loss of the season. The Rambelle bats were held to just two hits over the final three innings, after registering eight hits over the first four innings.
Tarleton State came out in game two and jumped on Urbany in the first inning. TSU scored three runs as Urbany was pulled after just one out. The sophomore gave up three runs on four hits.
Madison Greenwell led off the bottom of the first with a hit and stole second but was stranded. ASU was held to just one hit over the next three innings. Tarleton State added to its lead in the top of the fourth. A single by Savannah Stech scored two runs and Stech came home one batter later on a single up the middle.
The Rambelles found some life in the bottom of the fifth. Granado led the inning off with a double and a Ambra Hill double made the score 6-1. Katlyn Herzog added two runs in the top of the sixth with a two-run home run. It is the sophomore's first home run of the season and brought the score to 6-3 after six innings. Tarleton State added the final run on a fielder's choice for the final score of 7-3.
Granado pitched 6.2 innings only allowing four runs on five hits while striking out two. Urbany was credited with the loss and is now 10-5 on the season.
The Rambelles will return tomorrow for the conclusion of their LSC four-game series with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
