GUNNISON, Colo., -Â The No. 12 Angelo State football team racked up 666 yards of total offense, the second most total offensive yards in a game in school history, on the way to a 48-20 victory over Western State Colorado at the Mountaineer Bowl.
The Rams (2-0) threw for 424 yards and rushed for 242 and limited the Mountaineers (0-2) to just 47 yards rushing. The defense picked off three WCSU passes including a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown by
Jonathan Shannon. Angelo State is now 8-1 in its last nine road games.
Kyle Washington threw for the fourth most yards in a single game in ASU history while also setting a career high with 423 passing yards. The senior completed a career high 36 completions with three touchdowns while adding 51 yards on the ground and three rushing touchdowns.Â
Donovan Thompson and
Anthony Pierson each set career highs with 134 and 122 receiving yards, respectively.
Ryan Byrd recorded 106 yards on the ground to lead ASU.
The Rams didn't take long to get on the board after the defense stopped the WSCU opening drive. After an eight yard run by Byrd, Washington found Thompson for a 32-yard touchdown strike and a 6-0 lead after the missed extra point.
WSCU answered on the next drive going eight plays in 75 yards scoring on a 14-yard pass from Brett Arrivey to Mark McDonald.
ASU went back to work as Washington found Pierson for a 21-yard completion to go deep into the Mountaineers territory. The Rams moved inside the five-yard line but faced a fourth down on the one. Washington followed a block and stretched across the line for his first rushing touchdown of the game.
Another defensive stop gave the ball back at the ASU 28. Washington found Thompson for a 28-yard gain and
Trey Green found a seam for a 31-yard rush to move it to the one yard line. It took another fourth down stretch over the line by Washington to extend the lead to 20-7.
The Rams defense forced it(s) first turnover of the season with an interception by
Kevin Wharry on the opening drive of the second quarter. An ASU punt was followed by a
missed field goal to give the ball back to the Rams.
ASU moved the ball eight plays on 80 yards to make it 26-7. Washington hit
Talon Smith for his second passing touchdown of the game. It also tied the ASU record for career passing touchdowns at 61. The Rams got a chance to add to its lead with 1:21 left in the first half.
Mark Munson caught a 13 yard pass and T. Smith added a 14-yard
and 16-yard receptions to move the ball to the WSCU three yard line. ASU settled for a 19-yard field goal from
Josh Sparkman.
The Rams totaled 370 yards of total offense in the first half with 114 on the ground and 256 through the air.
Western State came out and made things interesting in the third quarter. The Rams offense struggled to get going and WSCU cut the lead to 29-20 on back-to-back field goals and a 21-yard touchdown pass.
Washington led the offense back on the field and orchestrated an 11-play, 75 yard drive down the field. Byrd had consecutive carries of nine and 10 yards added with a 21-yard reception by Thompson moved the ball to the 10-yard line. Washington added his third rushing touchdown of the game to put some breathing room at 35-20.
Washington made history on the first ASU drive of the fourth quarter. He found T. Smith on back-to-back 13-yard receptions. The second was Washington's 62nd career passing touchdown of his career which moved him pass Josh Neiswander for the ASU career record.
The Rams defense joined the scoring midway through the fourth quarter to make it 48-20. Shannon jumped a Brett Arrivey pass and intercepted it returning it 40 yards for his second career interception return touchdown.
ASU picked up another interception by
Ryan Clapsaddle but did cough up the ball three times (one interception, two fumbles).
The Rams will travel to AT&T Stadium for the Lone Star Football Festival for a game with Bacone College on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m.
