Belles Bounce Back With 2-0 Win

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State soccer team bounced back with a win Sunday afternoon, scoring a goal in each half to top Texas Woman's 2-0 at the ASU Soccer Field.

The Belles (8-3-1, 4-2-0 LSC) only allowed three shots from the Pioneers (6-5-1, 2-4-0 LSC) in the entire game, only one of which was on goal. Goalkeeper Sammy Cude made the save for the one shot on goal, earning her sixth shutout on the season and moving her overall record to 7-2-1.

"I was really pleased with the way they performed," said Angelo State head coach Travis McCorkle said. "[Texas Women's] is obviously a good team. We did a very good job today minimizing their shots and minimizing their effectiveness. We also created a lot of chances for ourselves."

ASU struck early in the game, scoring less than 10 minutes into the match by way of a free kick. Kathleen Keoughan served the ball into the box and Trenadey Scott headed it home. The goal was Scott's third of the season and gave Keoughan her first assist of the season and give the Belles an early lead.

The first half ended with the score still 1-0, but the Belles had gotten off 12 shots to just one for TWU and they did not slow up in the second half. ASU got off another 11 shots in the final 45 minutes of play, culminating in the 80th minute when the Belles got their second goal of the afternoon.

Shay Williams took a corner kick to start the play for the Belles, and after Demi Tsambasis had a shot blocked by the Pioneers, Cynthia Andrews collected the rebound and deposited in the top corner of the goal, putting the Belles up 2-0. It was the second goal of the season for Andrews.

Also creating chances for the Belles was Morgan Sibson, who finished with six shots including three on goal, Tsambasis finished with four shots and one on goal while Ally Warren and Elizabeth Rodriguez each got off three shots on the day.

The Belles will play their final two home matches of the season, as they take on Eastern New Mexico Friday Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. before facing West Texas A&M at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
