Belles Fall to Texas A&M-Commerce in LSC Semifinal

COMMERCE, Texas – The Angelo State women's soccer team had its season end at the Lone Star Conference Championship semifinals in a 1-0 loss to Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday evening.

The Belles finish the year with an 11-7-2 and took 10 shots on the night with three being on goal. All three shots on goal came in the second half. The 11 victories marks the fifth straight season ASU has won at least 10 matches.

"We played well today, Angelo State head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "We just came up short against a well rested Texas A&M-Commerce team. I thought despite playing a full game and two overtimes with PKs in less that 24 hours that we had some high quality chances tonight. Ally (Warren) nearly scored within the first five minutes and there were many other shots that we just barely missed on. We did everything we could for the result tonight. We grew a lot this year as a team and we look forward to next season."

The Lions (14-5) advance to face Midwestern State in the LSC Championship game on Sunday afternoon. TAMUC took 14 shots on the night but only three were on goal.

The only goal of the match came in the 37th minute. TAMUC's Delaney Bunselmeyer scored on a shot off a corner from Savannah Grasser.

The Belles didn't quit pressuring the Lions in the second half. ASU took seven shots in the second half while limiting TAMUC to just five.

Demi Tsambasis put the first ASU shot on goal in the 65th minute but it was saved. Elizabeth Rodriguez took the final two including one in the 87th minute but both were saved.

Rodriguez led the Belles with four shots and two on goal. Ally Warren added two shots while Tsambasis, Ashley Exford, Morgan Sibson and Judith Verdaguer each took one.

The match will close the book on the careers of Tsambasis, Exford, Shay Williams, Kathleen Keoughan, Lauren Perry, Cynthia Andrews and Haley Mendel.

"I want to thank the seven seniors," McCorkle said. "They have been great ambassadors for Angelo State on the field, in the classroom and in the community."
