CANYON, Texas – The Angelo State softball team split the second day of games at the WT Invitational defeating Metro State 11-5 and losing to Lubbock Christian 5-1.
"I was proud of the way our team played toady against two quality opponents," Angelo State softball coach Travis Scott said. "Kenedy Urbany was awesome after the second inning of game one and really crushed the ball in game two. Brandy Marlett was solid against Metro State. We really hit the ball on the nose the whole game. We need a win tomorrow to salvage the weekend."
ASU (7-3) bounced back from an early morning 5-1 loss to Lubbock Christian in a big way against Metro State. The Rambelles took their first lead of the weekend on a Taegan Kirk two RBI single in the first inning.
Metro State was able to get one run back off Brandy Marlett in the first and tied it up in the second. The bats responded as Becky Wilhelm roped a double to centerfield that scored Urbany and Alexis Evans for a 4-2 advantage.
The Belles broke the game open in the fourth. Madison Greenwell singled and would score on a Bailey Wallace double. Evans hit an RBI single to bring Kirk to the plate. The freshman turned on a pitch to send it over the left field fence. The three run home run is the first ASU home run of the season and the first collegiate home run for Kirk to go up 9-2. Kirk finished the game going 3-for-4 and drove in a career high five RBIs.
The Roadrunners cut the lead to 9-4 but Urbany got the runs back in the fifth. The junior sent a shot to deep center for her first home run of the year. It is Urbany's 18th home run of her career.
The runs would be all Marlett would need. The sophomore picked up her fourth win of the year. She scatter nine hits and struck out 10 batters. It is the fifth career double digit strike out game for Marlett.
The Rambelles was only able to record four hits and score one run against LCU starter Katrina Eltsosie. ASU did strand eight runners in the first game.
Lubbock Christian scored all five runs in the second inning off four hits. Three of the hits were home runs. ASU's only run came in the fourth inning as Kelly Johnson hit a RBI single to score Becky Wilhelm from third.
Urbany was credited with the loss despite tying her career high with eight strikeouts. Â
