Rambelles Earn 3-1 Series Win Over Eastern New Mexico

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State earned a Lone Star Conference series win over Eastern New Mexico with a 6-4 victory in the series finale splitting its doubleheader on Saturday at Mayer Field.

The Rambelles improve to 18-5 on the season and 7-1 in the LSC. The Greyhounds are now 9-15 and 2-6 in the LSC.

"We feel good about the way we are playing despite today's first game," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "We have had a lot of good preparation and they have bonded together. They work hard and that is going to help us get through these tough conference series coming up. The next two week is going to be a challenge but I feel like we are ready."

ASU needed to bounce back in game four of the series after dropping game three 12-9.  ENMU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first inning but the Rambelles responded. Alexis Evans and Taegan Kirk each recorded RBIs to tie the game at two.

Morgan Hill, who started in the circle in game four, helped her own cause in a big way in the bottom of the second. The sophomore sent a shot to deep centerfield for her first home run of her ASU career. The hit also put Angelo State on top 3-2.

Hill would hold the Greyhounds scoreless in the second and third while striking out five along the way. ENMU was able to regain the lead in the fourth 4-3 with two runs off three hits.

Kenedy Urbany stepped up in a big way in the fifth. The junior hit her fourth home run of the season and second in as many days to tie the game at four after five innings.

Hill continued to pitch well getting out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth to keep the game tied. The Rambelles offense would come through in the sixth. Lanie Robinson opened the inning with a walk. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Hill and on to third on a fielder's choice. Bailey Wallace had the game-winning hit with a single to left field to plate Robinson. Alexis Evans added an insurance run in with a RBI single up the middle for a 6-4 lead.

ENMU tried to tie it in the top of the seventh. Back-to-back singles were followed by two grounders to have runners at second and third. An intentional walk loaded the bases with Hill in the circle. The sophomore quickly ended the game striking out ENMU's batter on three pitches.

Hill earned her second win of the season. She struck out a career high 10 batters in 7.0 innings of work. The Salado native allowed four runs on 11 hits.

"The last game I thought Morgan Hill threw well but ENMU was able to get to her," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "We made some good defensive plays and offensively we did just enough to seal the victory. We had to earn it today. We had to do whatever we could to get the win and thankfully it worked out."

The Belles were able to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the first game on Saturday. Urbany drove in Wallace from first base with a double to centerfield. Evans made it 2-0 with a RBI single up the middle.

ASU's bats would go cold after the first only recording one hit until the seventh inning. Urbany did her job in the circle through the first five innings only allowing four hits.

ENMU's bats came alive in the six scoring six runs, only one earned, on five hits. The Greyhounds finished with two homeruns, a triple and two singles in the inning to take a 6-2 advantage and added to it in the seventh. ENMU scored six runs off Riley Adams in relief to take a 12-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

The Rambelles made it interesting in their final three outs. After a leadoff walk, Kelly Johnson hit ASU's fourth hit of the game and first since the second inning. Katlyn Herzog brought home Robinson with a single to left field.

Johnson came home on a Greenwell fielder's choice for the first out of the inning. Two straight hit-by-pitches would load the bases and Evans drew a walk to cut the lead to 12-5 with just one out. Taegan Kirk singled to right field to score one and keep the bases loaded. A fielder's choice to home plate forced the second out of the inning with ASU down 12-6. Robinson stepped back to the plate and singled to centerfield to score two. Johnson followed it up with her second hit of the inning and cut the deficit to 12-9 and the tying run at the plate.

Herzog walked to load the bases again but ENMU induced a grounder to the second baseman to end the game.

"The first game today was frustrating. Kenedy was on a roll and in the sixth they were able to put hits together. ENMU is scrappy and can get hits. We knew they could score and we had to continue to score. I felt like we gave it away because after scoring two in the first we shutdown offensively. We battled and had a chance in the seventh but couldn't finish."

The Rambelles will travel to Canyon, Texas, to take on No. 1 West Texas A&M next Friday, March 11 and Saturday, March 12.
