Rambelles Sweep Day One Doubleheader from Midwestern State

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State softball team swept the first doubleheader with Midwestern State by a score of 8-3 in both games on Saturday afternoon at Mayer Field.

The Rambelles improve to 24-15 on the season and 12-10 in the LSC. ASU out hit the Mustangs (22-20, 7-11 LSC) 13-7 in game one and 11-7 in game two. Angelo State improves to 23-4 on the year when scoring at least six runs in a game and is also 12-4 at Mayer Field.

"Getting two complete games out of Brandy and Morgan was outstanding," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "Midwestern State is a good offensive team and for both of them to get the win was impressive and what we needed today. I was really excited because we finally accomplished what we had been struggling to do and that is get the big hit with runners on base.  We were able to put up some big numbers and hopefully that gets us back on track. We need to string some wins together and today was a great start."

Midwestern State grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first game after one inning. Lanie Robinson tied the game in the bottom of the second with a RBI single that plated Alexis Evans. Evans extended her streak of reaching base safely to 35 straight games.

The Mustangs regained a lead in the third with one run on two hits. The Rambelles opened it up with four runs in the third. Bailey Wallace singled to right field to score Morgan Hill to tie the game. Kenedy Urbany doubled off the center field wall to score Madison Greenwell and Wallace to take a 4-2 advantage. Evans added her first RBI of the game with a single to left field.

Brandy Marlett would shut down the Mustangs in the next three inning only allowing three hits.

Urbany and Evans each added RBIs in the fourth to increase ASU's lead to 7-2. Urbany, who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, singled through the left side to score Greenwell while Evans, 3-for-4 with a run scored, hit into a fielder's choice to allow Wallace to cross.

Taegan Kirk added another run in the sixth with a single up the middle to bring in Ambra Hill from third.

Marlett threw her ninth complete game of the season to improve to 9-7 on the season. The sophomore struck out a season high 11 batters. It is her third double-digit strikeout of the season and seventh of her career. The Henderson, Nevada native allowed three runs on seven hits.

MSU struck first in game two with one run in the third. The bottom of the third was another big inning for the Rambelles for the second straight game.

Robinson led the inning off with a single while Ambra Hill walked to put two on. Morgan Hill hit a ball over the left fielder's head for a ground-rule double to score Robinson. Greenwell used her speed to beat out a single and score Ambra Hill. Urbany recorded another RBI with a single to centerfield to put ASU up 3-1.

Wallace brought in another run in the fourth as she was hit by a pitch for the 16th time this season with the bases loaded to push the advantage to 4-1.

Morgan Hill held MSU to just one hit over the next three innings.

ASU extended its lead in the bottom of the sixth. Robinson singled and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Greenwell, Wallace and Urbany hit three singles in a row. It was Urbany's fourth RBI of the weekend. Evans extended her streak of reaching base safely to 36 games with her fourth double of the season. The double scored Wallace and Brooke Mangold to make the score 8-1.

MSU added two runs in the seventh but Hill closed the door for her fifth win of the season. The sophomore threw her fifth complete game of the season. She gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out three batters.

The Rambelles and Mustangs conclude the series with a doubleheader starting tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Mayer Field.
